Hi.  I haven't posted in a long while.

In the conception stage: a men's formal vest, probably in silk.  Commercial pattern.

I thought about also doing a silk scarf (same warp and weft, but dye the warp for the scarf portion).

For a men's formal silk scarf, do you think it better to have a small fringe or to have hems?

If I use fringe, is there any special technique to use to set up the fringe so I get fringe on both ends, or do I simply unravel the weft when I am done?

And - how do I get a neat selvedge on the edge of the scarf closer to the vest yardage, or is this not possible?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I should have said:  I thought about also doing a silk scarf on the same warp and weave it at the same time as the vest yardage.

I am not sure I understand.  Do you intend to make your warp wide enough for both a scarf and a vest cut them apart and seam one edge of the scarf?

Otherwise if you intend to leave a gap between  you will still not have a selvage on the side of the scarf next to the vest fabric and will have to seam it - unless you use two shuttles - one only for the scarf and one only for the vest fabric.  Using two shuttles will take a surprisingly long time to weave. You may be better off just putting on two warps one at a time (assuming the scarf warp will be narrower than the vest fabric).  if the scarf can be as wide as the vest fabric why not just add the scarf to the length of the warp for the vest.

As for the fringes ...some people do weave in waste warp a little longer than the intended length of the fringe on both ends.  you can use anything that will be easy to remove (not wool or a soft cotton).  Linen is nice because it is easy to remove and doesn't leave lint.

Best wishes.
