last night i boiled 5 chesnuts to make a recipe and noticed the water had a lot of color.miss frugal here saved it and this morning i dyed some rough silk which had been previously mordanted in alum.

soft simmer for an hour and the color is simply amazing! the silk is still sitting in the dye pot waiting/hoping for the color matter to exhaust. will post photos when the yarn's ready.

best,

couldn't wait to exhaust the dye bath. here's the color i got on alum mordanted silk. don't think it's really necessary to mordant as chestnut skins are rich in tannin.

The chestnut burrs that I dyed with were one of my favorite dye materials. The golden brown color was great and very colorfast both with and without alum as a mordant. I see that your color is rosier, more like the color I got from the leaves and bark, though lighter. (I used a lot more dye material.) Nice, congratulations.
