online class : All About Yarns by Jennifer Raymond at https://www.craftonlineuniversity.com

I just started the course; the first lessons are about plies and weights. It has demystified the terms used to describe yarn. I now feel more confidant choosing yarn, no matter if they use a name, a weight, or a number to describe it. If they give information for knitters, I can more easily convert it to my needs.

The course is heavily weighted towards knitters and crocheters; however, I would still recommend it to new weavers. So far, it is about yarns, not the weaving fibers, such as cottons and linen.

From the web site under What You Will Learn:

  • How to determine the weight and size of your yarn.
  • Discover how ply and yarn weight influence the final presentation of your colorwork or lace.
  • How to look at yarns to determine which ones is suited for which project.
  • Determine which yarns will be suited for high-wear items, and which yarns would be better for next-to-skin wearing.
  • Understand how fibers in yarns influence the final look, drape and sturdiness of your garment.
  • How to figure out what your “mystery yarns” are made of, and how best to use them in your projects.
  • … and much more!
