I've decided to build a warping frame as described by Allen Fannin in "Handloom Weaving Technology". The plan for the frame seems clear enough. But, whereas Fannin writes that the pegs on most commercially available warping boards are too long and/or too thin, I have not seen the ideal lenght and diameter stated anywhere in the book. Or have I overlooked it? Does anybody have any information on the subject or do I have to go by "feel"?

Thanks, Klara

The one I built from left over bed slats ( 3/4 x 3 inch boards) and 1/2 inch wooden dowel was set up so that I would have 1 yard across at a slight diagonal to the next peg and enough vertical pegs that let me put a total of 10 yards. I had hinged "kickstand" legs and would sit on the floor rather than hang on the wall.

I don't always agree with Allen, but I agree with him on the dowel lengths.  Most warping frames and reels have dowels which are too long.  So, I sometimes trim them by an inch or a little more.  Long dowels just entice you to wind too much and they stick out too far for your hand to move around them.  3 inches when inserted is long enough.  More than 5 is certainly much too long.

Wood bends. Use 3/4" minimum, 1" is better, 1.25" is best. And leave plenty of room between for your hands.

Nice job! 3/4" x 3" boards should serve you well. I agree with Joanne that a length on the pegs of 3" will make using it easier, but since yours seem to be longer you have the opportunity to try them another length, and see if it suits you. Great using "leftovers", and I like the "Kickstand" legs! Frank.

Thanks Frank, the "frame" is no longer used. It got chopped down to recycle the boards to make a warping wheel. I did have those dowels out to about 4 inches and I would occasionally bump my hand passing yarn trough and over. Yes, less than 4 inches long is better.

So, basically the thickest dowels I can find (and have the drill bit for - 26 or 28 mm, I think), and 7 to 8 cm sticking out of the wood. Will do!
