I have an 8 shaft, 26" width loom. It uses levers in front. It looks like a large table loom on a stand, but the beater swivels on a steel rod located on the base.

I suspect it may be a Structo, as what is left of the label on the front is a partial "R" then "TCRAFT LOOM", but I cannot find any pictures to compare it to.

(The label is red letters on a gold bacground) The only number I can find on it is stamped into the wood on top - 4784

Can anyone help me identify it?

Pictures would help us help you.   Click on the thing that looks like a green TV to upload them.

I will try, but I am on dial-up and sometimes have trouble uploading images - it may be a while :-)

CatErin

Sorry. I am unable to upload the picture. Is there an email address I can send it to and have someone else post it for me?

Thank you so much for your help, SallyE! It's much appreciated.

Once I know what loom I have I will be looking for info on care and maintenance and use. I have been weaving rag rugs on a two-harness floor loom for years, but know nothing about weaving on a loom like this.

I'm anxious to learn!

Thanks again.

It's a Structo Artcraft loom.  We have one just like it, without the floor stand.  Janet Meany of the Loom Manual Library probably has a reprint of the manual for you.  Because yours has the gray paint, it's probably post WW2.

CatErin

Thank you, sequel, for your help - and for pointing me to the Loom Manual Library. I'm off to check it out.

CatErin,

There is also an all_things_structo group at Yahoo that may be able to help you with this loom. Many participants here at Weavo are members of both groups. They are terrific workhorse looms, and great for kid demos.

I joined the all_things_structo group (thanks for suggesting that, Sally!) and downloaded the 1947 catalog. The specs for the 750 match my loom - is that what you have, sequel? The loom I have seems to be in good working order - it needed a little oil on the release mechanism and I'd like to polish up the wood a bit. It is, however, missing the wooden warp beam and the accessories that are listed in the catalog. Do you have any advice for starting to work on this loom? I thought I'd remove 4 of the harnesses and try some 4H patterns first. Or can I just push the heddles out of the way on 4 of the harnesses? Also, to find the age of the loom, would I use the number stamped in the wood on top of the castle? If so, the serial number would be stated as 750-4784, correct?

I don't have a catalog so cannot comment of the missing parts.  Our loom has only the wooden back beam.  What does yours have?  Just the steel beam meant to hold the metal spools?

Tom Beaudet has re-habbed several of these looms, even making new spools for the steel beams.  Here's his page, with Structo loom pics at the bottom. He'd be the one to ask about parts.  He helped me.

BTW:  The color of these looms changed from black paint to gray after WW2 because the surplus "battleship gray" paint was cheaper!

CatErin

it only has the steel hex warp beam for the spools. The previous owner (deceased) laid an additional stick to the beam and dressed the loom the usual way (w/o spools) tying the warp ends to both the stick and steel beam.  Do you think that would work ok, if I don't get spools?  Or should I look for a wood warp beam? The accessories in the catalog included things like shuttles, lease sticks, manual and pattern books - none of which were still with the loom. But I'm not surprized at that.

It's such fun learning about the history of the loom - thanks for sharing about the color of the paint! I'm interested in anything else you can tell me.

Thanks!

Hi, I also have just acquired a structo artcraft 750 loom.  It is missing the beater, beater bar and reed and possibly more.  It is like the picture, with the grey paint.  I am trying to join the all things structo, but for some reason, have not gotten a response, maybe I did something wrong when I signed up, will try again.  Anyhow, I read this whole post and tried the manual library, didn't find my loom there but wrote to inquire the availability.  Also tried the link for Tom Beaudet but it says it was locked, any input?  Thanks all for letting me join.

Congrats on your new-to -you loom. You can weave with the existing warp beam setup as long as the stick and the attaching cords are sturdy. As for using 4 of the 8 shafts, unless your warp would rub against the heddles on the unused shafts, there is no reason to remove them. I have 2 1/2 of the little sample size structos and I love them! For easier threading, I remove the reed and raise the shafts. Much less frustrating!

SallyE, I just one identical to it, and I think you are correct! The mechanism looks identical to other Structo looms that I have found with side mounted levers.
