My Corner Of The World - May 2013 Because of the popularity of this thread, we'll start a new thread each month! The idea is to tell us what is going on in your corner of the world. It does not have to be weaving related, but it could be. Feel free to tell us about holidays in your country, whether it is religious, or Independence day, or commemoration days. Please include a picture when you add your post. Weavers are very visual people. Please remember to downsize your photo before uploading. Be sure to tell us where you are (city, state/province, country?) This forum has members internationally. Have a good day!

many happy memories of childhood going door to door in our neighborhood leaving flowers and homemade cards for special friends. Does anyone do that anymore or is that a lost tradition?

I did! I did! You'd make them up, hang them on the front doorknob, ring the doorbell, and go hide to watch the delighted reaction.

And when I moved to NJ in the late 80's, my two little neighbor boys made May Day baskets for me. Loved it!

francorios (not verified)

Nope. No May Day Baskets for me. Growing up in Los Angeles, Calif our May Day elementary school celebrations usually included ethnic dances by the students. So I had to learn some Philipino dance while the Vietnamese kids had to learn a Mexican folk dance. And so we danced! Have a good day! Franco Rios

Today is National Day of Prayer in USA, as authorized by the Congress, the first Thursday of May each year. Please take a moment to pause and pray for the future of this Republic, according to your faith and traditions. May God bless and protect America. Have a joyful day! Franco Rios Sacramento, Calif

My corner of the world today has taken us through the Peaks District. We stopped at a couple of museums. I did upload some photos to my blog. Http://laurasloom.blogspot.com For anyone interested. Tomorrow we head for Scotland Cheers Laura

sally orgren

Laura,

Say Hi to Cally Booker if you cross her path while in Scotland! (And ask to see her cool handwoven pants, which is how I first met her. I noticed her pants on the street corner as we waited for the light to change!)

Taking advantage of a last minute change in my travel plans this week, Inky got to meet John Mullarkey last night!

Queezle

May in Utah started with snow.  I was disappointed until I realized it was the perfect excuse for spending time at my loom - instead of in the garden.

laurafry

We are very much hoping to see Cally. Maybe even Stacey Harvey Brown. :) Cheers Laura

When I was a child we used to make up little baskets (paper cups with handles, usually) of candy and leave them on the porch of our friends.   We would ring the door bell and run.   The person that the basket was for was supposed to chase us and give us a kiss.   The problem with this plan was that they usually weren't there because they too were out delivering baskets!  I wonder if children still do this?

Did anyone see the last episode of "Vickings" on the history channel Sunday night?   The main female character (don't remember her name) was weaving on a vertical warp weighted loom.   Awhile ago someone on this site was talking about building one of these for a movie.   I wonder if this is the show they were talking about?   Does anybody know?

by tying on - but how can they know *which* of all these saved threadings to retrieve?

(Yes, there is a whole wall of them - these were seen at Masson mill, near Matlock, West Yorkshire, UK)

I was judging 4H Rabbit Showmanship today in Woodland Calif. Please visit my blog to see pictures. http://therabbitgeek.blogspot.com/2013/05/yolo-4h-fair.html It was a good day!

sally orgren

I LOVE it!

If you were the curator of that space, wouldn't you want to see what pattern was on each of those stored shafts?

My sons and I made a road trip to see West Coast Classic Rabbit Show in Reno Nevada. Just went up for a couple of hours and came back down. I have pictures on picasaweb https://plus.google.com/photos/105050480374519059715/albums/5874343718727854225?banner=pwa Have a good day!

sally orgren

Does that mean the North Yorkshire Moors?

endorph

sounds and looks like you are having a wonderful trip - I am very jealous!

laurafry

Area around Manchester today. But it seems like there are textiles in some form or another in many places. Just spent a lovely evening with Stacey Harvey-Brown. So nice to finally meet in person people from various chat groups. ;) Cheers Laura

Dawn McCarthy

My home town!  lots to see! Paradise & Style mill are "must sees" close by, the textile museum Manchester center also!

No time for Manchester, unfortunately. :( Starting to head south east towards London. Got to both the silk museum and Styal today. :) Cheers Laura

You are a gal after my own heart with your photo posts! I am drooling...

I'm going to Charlotte for work for a few days next week, and then will drive to Raleigh.  Are there any fiber-related places I should know about? I will probably have a bit of time...

sally orgren

Shuttles Needles & Hooks in Cary, NC,

(Research Triangle area, near Raleigh.) I haven't been recently, but they used to be a fairly decent weaving store.

Queezle

Thanks - now I know why I decided on a late Saturday return!

sally orgren

With its distinctive vinegar-based sauce. (If you don't eat meat, just relish the hush puppies and fried okra instead.) And at the Charlotte airport, you can try deep fried pickles!

Hummingbird I see on the way to work. Same bird, change in position, change in light on feathers causes color shift. Bird is called Anna's Hummingbird.
Have a good day!

Currently on the ferry from England to Denmark. Back in Sweden tomorrow and home next weekend. So many things and people not seen. Maybe that means I have to return??? Cheers Laura Photos on my and Kerstins blogs...

Headed home from a plant sale, it looked like I was driving straight toward that pot of gold.  The second rainbow is difficult to see, but just slightly to the right.double rainbow in Salt Lake City

Yep, Inky stayed home. Inky's sibling, the tablet loom, is traveling with me this week in the handmade backpack under the seat along with my laptop.

Also, this is the newly reconfigured United A320. The new seats are missing just a few things — no recline button, no earphone jacks (headphones with jacks were provided, but no inflight entertainment).

The good news, the new seat back pocket is narrower, so you get a smidge more knee room, and the mesh makes it easy not to leave something on the plane.

I am hoping this isn't the "new" configuration where they are trying to add another row of seats in coach by removing space from the restrooms in the back of the plane!

sally orgren

to the Weaving History Conference! I stopped to snap this photo in Cleveland between terminals.

Love finding new words that are just so...perfect!

"Fankle....is more or less a straight synonym of tangle, but it sounds better somehow. Particularly as applied to a fishing line that's got itself into a terrible, un-sort-outable mess, the level of shambles so extreme all you can really do is take a knife to it and throw it away. That's a fankle." Iain Banks, Stonemouth

cheers,

Laura

word Laura - I will be adding it to my weaving and knitting vocabulary! So far it is a gray and gloomy day here in Central Texas - warm and muggy - summer heat is already here with the 90s making their first appearance for the season over the weekend - I am not ready for the heat.

laurafry

Spring has been a long time coming here - I will send you some 'chill' if you send me some 'heat'!  :^)

cheers,

Laura
