My Corner Of The World - April 2013 Because of the popularity of this thread, we'll start a new thread each month! The idea is to tell us what is going on in your corner of the world. It does not have to be weaving related, but it could be. Feel free to tell us about holidays in your country, whether it is religious, or Independence day, or commemoration days. Please include a picture when you add your post. Weavers are very visual people. Please remember to downsize your photo before uploading. Be sure to tell us where you are (city, state/province, country?) This forum has members internationally. Have a good day!

I need to warm up my loom! I am beginning to wonder if I will again, for the second time in my life, see snow on my birthday. If you're curious, it's this Friday!

Cheers,

I spent the day Saturday in NYC with guildmates. We saw the print exhibit at the Japan Society Gallery, Nick Cave's "Heard in NYC" performance at Grand Central Station, and then enjoyed the sun in Bryant Park. Walking back to our respective trains, we zipped through Fashion Square.

its snowing - all depending on where you are! Here in Central Texas the temps have dropped - from the 80s yesterday to a chilly 39 with strong winds and rain today - Ahhh - gotta love the spring - at least we don't have the snow other parts of the US are getting hit with

at Columbus State University — Columbus, Georgia. Made completely out of recycled cardboard.

Incredible fine art facilities on their River Park campus, and a study abroad program in art that takes their students to Japan. (I saw a textile exhibit of student work from small looms, perhaps produced over there. No floor looms were evident.)

I am leaving to teach a tapestry workshop at the Woolery, tomorrow, Sat and Sun.  If any of you live in the area, stop by and say hello.

Okay, I had to take a photo. How would you like to be the weaver and seams-person who made these gloves for space? It was amazing to see, and I wish the display would allow me to see the back side of the gloves. The smaller glove fits inside of the bigger glove, and they were designed for extremely cold temperatures. Wow!

Yesterday was the last day to legally use winter wheels on the cars. Last wheel in place:

Never mind this:

"This, too, will pass" (I hope)

Oh Joy.

When do other countries require the annual taxes to be paid?

prayers going out to the folks in West, Texas impacted by the explosion of the fertilizer plant. That was about 20 miles norht of where I live. Horrible destruction, injuries and deaths. it is a rainy, nasty day here today - going to make that much worse in West. Sad days

So far, it wasn't bad. I did not see significant delays at Newark Liberty or in Atlanta on the boards. Thankfully. But it IS just the beginning of the week.

is in my corner of the world today - in fact all of the living presidents are just north of here this morning for the dedication of the Bush Presidential Library - later pres. and Mrs. Obama will be here in Waco for a memorial service for the victims from the explosion in West. They are expecting something like 4000 first responders to be in attendance for the service. We are located just down the block from where the service is bing held. The last time a President (G.W. Bush) was near here we ended up with snipers on our roof and gun boats on the river. am guessing it will be similar today!

Today we finished cold mangling my samples for A Good Yarn: Linen and Hemp.  Kerstin did some digging on the internet and found a web page with information on one of the largest cold mangles we know about and translated some of the information, posting it to her blog.

For anyone interested her blog is http://oddweavings.blogspot.se

She also took some before and after photos of a couple of the samples we cold mangled today.

cheers,

Laura

Whew April has flown by since my birthday at the beginning of the month! The weeks feel really long and the weekends far too short. In order to get some weaving in during May, I'm sondiering the concept of a Tapestry Diary for the month of May. I would appreciate any general guidelines or advice from those who have tackled this particular design/concept. I've done some preliminary reading on the concept.

Obviously there are no hard and fast rules, but if I'm going to do this I only have so long to decide on my concept for the May Tapestry Diary.

Cheers,

Erica

Hi Tina,

When we had our tapestry class at Homestead Fiber Crafts, Yohannah was desiging, in preparation for weaving, presidential towels on the drawloom, for the opening of the library.  Have you seen the towels?

Joanne

endorph

I saw the prototype of the towel - I even recognized the fce without reading the title on the towel, which was backwards. I know she wa waiting for a corrected graphic so not sure where the project is right now! It was impressive - so much talent out there.

The ferry is approaching the coast of England. We will be landing soon. It is a lovely cloudless day. Perfect for touring. Let the adventure begin! Cheers Laura
