Hey All Rayon Chenille weavers!  Here is the place for all things Chenille......

Su Butler

Hey all......introduce yourself and tell us about your experiences with Rayon Chenille....all questions welcome!~

berylmoody

Just read about this new group in the main forums and jumped on the chance to get feedback about weaving with rayon chenille.  I have done a few successful pieces and a few that weren't successful, so I'll be glad to have this group to glean new information.  In my stash I have a "ton" of rayon chenille just begging to be woven into sumptous shawls and scarves!

Wow 14 people already!  Please use the FORUM for our discussions......ask questions or tell us about your latest chenille project to get us started!

Su Butler

HI Beryl........sorry, but this is the first I have seen your post!!   So, with tons of rayon chenille, what do you plan to weave??  I just fnished a four color double weave piece with a Tencel warp and Tencel and cotton weft.....have 7 yards left on the loom and will try using rayon cheinlle as at least one of the two wefts and see what happens......

Tell us about your unsuccessful pieces and perhaps there is something that can be discussed to make your future pieces successful!

Best,

Su

HI, My name is Susan Porter and I just joined the group.  Recently I have been playing around with my chenille scarves, so instead of weaving straight plain weave, I have tried basket weave and and a combination of basket weave alternating with rib weave.  I was a little worried that the rib weave would worm, but it came out well, stood up well to wet finishing, and now what's left to be seen is how it holds up to wear.  It's a very masculine looking scarf so I figured I would test it out on my brother in Maine who is generally hard on his clothes.  Wrong season for a test though so I will have to wait for colder weather to get the feedback.  I am using 1400ypp chenille set at 16epi.

Su Butler

HI Susan....welcome to the forum!  1450 ypp chenille at 16 epi and a firm beat should do pretty well.....basket weave may worm sooner than rib weave, but if your beat was really firm and your fringes were plied or braided, the scarves should last a good long time!  Got any pics??

Hi Su,

I can take pics, but don't know how to post them.

Susan

HI Susan......you can post your pic by hitting the little yellow square with what looks like a couple of small mountains on it, in the reply box to the messages.  It is the last icon on the right on the upper tool bar in the reply window.

For example, I loaded a pic below just by licking on the icon, then finding the picture I wanted to upload in my computer files

Cover of my new book

The tool that opens seems to size the pics for you.  If you have trouble loading a pic, let me know and we'll see what we can do......

We'd all love to see your successful scarves!

Best,

Su :-)

Su, when I click on the mountain image I get a box asking for the URL and image specs, and something in Latin.  I don't get a navigation box for finding the picture in my computer files.  Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks,

Susan

HI Susan......you need to have the pic stored somewhere on your computer.  Click on the icon, then when the new window opens, click on the Browse Server button.  Navigate to the place you stored the picture....for example maybe you stored it on your C drive so you look there until you find the file, then double click on it and it will fill in the URL box.  Ignore all the nonsense writing in the box, and in the alternative text line just below the URL line, type in what you want it to say. When all that is done, click on OK.  A new window will open with a thumbnail of your image.  You need to choose how large you want it to show on the site - for my pic I chose medium.  Then dlick on the image and it will transfer it to a lower portion of the window as a preview.  Once you approve of the preview, go to the upper tool bar and click upload.  Your image will now be placed in the reply box.  You can type beyond the image by just hitting your space bar and placing the cursor where you want it.  Hope that helps....it is an awkward way to upload an image, but at least we have the ability to share our photos!!

Hi Su, thanks for your patience with me on this!  I get the navigation box but it won't let me navigate to my own computer...it just keeps me on the server.  I usually don't have a problem with this kind of thing so I don't know what or if I am doing something wrong.  I have the photos stored on my computer, downsized so that there shouldn't be a problem with size, ready to upload if I can only navigate to them.

Thanks!

Susan

HI Susan.....OK - if the window won'd allow you to explore your computer, before you go to insert a pic, go to the pic on your computer, right click and choose properties......when the properties window opens, highlight the URL and copy it..  Then go to the reply window in our forum, clik on the icon, and when the new window opens, paste the URL into the URL line.  Then do the rest as before.....that should work......I hope <g>......

Ok, I did that but I don't see a picture.  Perhaps it will show when I post this.  Fingers crossed!

Well, that didn't seem to work either.  I don't get it.  Maybe I shoud just attach them to an e-mail and send them to you?

Susan

Su Butler

Yea, just send them in an email to me.....I'll see if I can post them....I tried tonight and things aren't working.....perhaps it is a glitch at the Weavolution end......if you go to my website at www.subudesigns.com, click on contact, an email will open and you can send to me from there.....

Ok Su, I think I figured out how to do it.  I first have to upload the picture to the server then I can post it... so I am going to try to post the Basketweave scarf... fingers crossed..again!

Well that one worked... finally!  Thanks for being so patient!  Here's the next picture..this one is the mixed rib weave and basket weave.

Lovely work Susan!!  Since the pics are small and my eyesight ain't what it used to be, can you tell about the float lenghts?  I would suspect they are very short due to seeing how little of the warp shows......anyway, the pieces look great and congrats on your success - both with the weaving and posting the photos!

Hi Su,

The basket weave is 2/2 so that's the extent of the float lengths.  The rib weave is 1:3 which is why I was a bit concerned about the chenille worming with the float lengths, but it seems pretty stable, and I did beat it pretty firmly.  I've been afraid to have more than a 2 thread float length with chenille before this.  It's one of the reasons I am interested in DPW..I want to do it with chenille.  I also ordered your book last week, and am anxious to get it.  I love the scarves you show on your web page!  Recently I've been working with 20/2 spun silk, so it's fun to work with chenille as a break...it goes so fast, but I get bored with just plain weave.  I tried some clasped-weft with the chenille, but I wasn't very good at it.  I have an 8 shaft point twill in silk on my big loom, and I decided to add a tabby ground on the current scarf to see what it looks like.  I think I might try that in chenille after I weave off the silk warp I have on there.  With the tabby the longest float is 2 threads so I'm guessing that will work.  There is just no end to the fun! :-)

Hello,

I join this group a few days ago but didn't introduce myself.

I love working with chenille and have done so for a long time.  Nevertheless, I am always looking for new ways to do things.  And Su is so knowledgeable and so helpful :-)  I just had to participate!

I also joined the shibori group where I posted a question but since it is also a chenille question may be I should  post it here as well.

I made shibory rayon chenille scarves and love the look.  I was wondering is someone who had made shibory  rayon chenille scarves ever tried to steam them to keep the "honey comb' made by the gathering thread?  Thank you to every one.

Maryse

Su Butler

HI Maryse!   I answered this on the Shibori forum, but for the benefit of those not on that one, I'll answer here again....

Rayon chenille will form permanent "wrinkles" if subjected to heat and pressure.  I do not know if it will retain permanent pleats, but you might try gathering it, steaming it, then, while it is hot, run it through a high spin cycle in your washer.....no water, just spin the heck out of it.......the pleats MIGHT remain......the downside to this is the body of the piece might retain wrinkles where you don't want them as well.......maybe a sampler is in order instead of risking an entire finished scarf......I think I'll try this in a couple weeks......if you do it first, please let us know what happens, and if you don't, I'll be sure to report back.......

Glad you've joined us Maryse!  Hope everyone will introduce themselves and let us know what you are up to with Rayon Chenille!
