So excited that Weavolution is up and running!  I have a new tapestry on the loom, a new wall hanging on a floor loom in the loom studios at the Southwest School of Art and Craft, and a new rigid heddle loom.  I'm set!

RHweaver (not verified)

Me too!

It was a bit of a hassle using Ravelry for weaving; I'm really looking forward to this since I do more weaving than knitting. :-)

(Psst... did you know the RH Yahoo group is doing a weave-along?)

Just got my first rigid heddle loom last month (a 12" Ashford Knitter's Loom) and I love it!  Have only had time for one warp so far but I love how portable it is and how easy to warp so I'm sure I'll be using it a lot over the summer.

You can see how my first RH project went here: http://scarfaday.blogspot.com/2009/05/introducing-snrh.html

I've just ordered my first one - a 16" Kromski Harp.  It should arrive tomorrow.  I'm sure I'll have lots of questions!

We travel most of the year in our 40' motorhome, so I hope the 16" will be a perfect size for me.

Started out as a rigid heddler, and still wear that alpaca scarf I made 40-odd years ago!  After decades, I'm back to weaving, and have four-shaft looms; Mom (Mary Temple, a teacher and weaver in her own right) has passed along to me her c.1976 Beka 20" RHFL which I'd best get warped up (dressed!) for a photo.

Hey Glenda,

I've had my Harp for about 6 months and I have done 3 projects on it.  I love having the warping board on the back and the warp helper is excellent.  In fact, my warp helper split in half and they replaced it for free.  Also, I screwed up when I put the handles on when assembling it and messed up my back beam and they replaced that.  My bf put the handles on the second time.  Be careful when putting it together.  Make sure you are lined up properly when screwing things in and on.  Other than that, it's a great, protable loom.  The DVD that comes with it is excellent, I learned everything I needed to put it together and warp it up.

Feel free to pm me if you need any help, not that i am any authority, but I have been using my Harp.

That's a great idea.  I have always wanted to do a WAL and never had it come up at the right time.

Sounds like fun, an maybe a little different with an rh loom.

We don't have a time frame - it officially started Saturday but I don't think anyone has their loom warped yet. :-)  And there is no end date either (I will probably be the last one done, as I'm a very pokey weaver).

We're doing log cabin, you pick what you want to weave in the pattern. :-D  Here's a link to the group if you're interested:

I have a brand new RH loom from Ashford, I've had it awhile, it's all polished and stained and ready to go, but I haven't had a chance to warp it yet!  I admit I'm a bit intimidated by the warping process.  We are leaving on Vacation for two weeks on Friday, so it won't happen till we get back.  I'm looking forward to learning to weave!!! Glad I found this site, and this group.

I am a fairly new weaver. I've done some projects on big loom and actually own a big loom, but most of my weaving has been on a rigid heddle. I am finishing up a cotton/linen scarf right now and will be doing the WAL, too. (I haven't posted on the group, but I read it every day!)

I have a couple cones of Sugar n Cream cotton for a start and just have to figure out what colors and if I need more yarn. I'm looking forward to playing with log cabin.

I just got the second heddle for my loom and have been experimenting a bit. I understand that one can make patterns - I'm looking in vain for a book, a site, etc. that might give me ideas for how to mazimise the "power of patterns" with my little loom. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hello All:

I'm Peggy in Utah.  I'm new to weaving with little experience.  I have been crafting for 30+ years.  I love fiber, and the animals that produce it.  I have a small fiber farm in Northeastern Utah.  I have a 32" Kromski rigid heddle and a Leclerc 4 harness/shaft loom.  I have completed only 1 project on my rigid heddle loom, and none on the Leclerc, but got it at such a good price I could not pass it up.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's projects and to be motivated to weave more projects myself.

Hello there:

I thought that Betty Davenport's new book, "Textures and Patterns for the Rigid Heddle", had some information on using the 2nd heddle.  I have purchased the book.  I'll have to look and see if that is a true statement.  I have both of her books and I think they are both worth purchasing.

WOW!!!  A serviceable scarf from 40 years ago.  That's some great alpaca, and great weaving.  Would love to see a picture of it..  I'm spinning some alpaca now.  What ply did you use?

I think Liz Gipson's new book, Weaving Made Easy, has some in it.  The library is holding the book for me and I hope I can get there today to pick it up.  I'll let you know as soon as I get to browse through it.  This is the best place for a question like that, I know I saw something online, maybe on Schacht's website.  I would give that a try.  It's http://www.schachtspindle.com/newsletter/newsletter.php there are lots of patterns and ideas in the past newsletters.  Betty Davenport's 2nd book talks about how to use the 2nd shuttle.  I would just warp it up and experiment, but I like to fly by the seat of my pants a lot.

I think it will be a race to see who finishes last.  Is that an oxymoron?  I haven't started my project yet, and I won't be able to start until I return from my visit with my son around the 1st of July.

I would love to do the log cabin pattern and I am thinking about making a pillow for the sofa.  I have this cool solid red wool fiber and 2 skeins of some fiber that is varigated red/orange/browns - fall colors.  I'm afraid it won't make the log cabin pattern, but maybe blocks of some sort.   I think I see it in my mind and then it's gone and I'm not sure how it will turn out.  Either way, it uses up some of my ever growing stash.

I've just received my copy of Liz Gipson's book from Amazon, along with the Barbara Mathieson book on small loom and free form weaving, but don't remember any 2-heddle projects - but theres lots of other stuff just begging to be tried!  There is a book for sale on Ebay on 3 heddle weaving. This recreates a lot of the 4 shaft twill weaves, but I haven't got around to getting a third heddle yet to try it out. I will probably end up using a pick-up stick and 2 heddles.

Otherwise find someone who has the second heddle kit for the Knitters Loom, as that comes with an instruction booklet, but its similar to the threading in the first Davenport book, pages 97- 99, Hands on Rigid Heddle Weaving. If you like flying, you might be able to use her basic diagram and descrition to experiment with!

HTH,

Caroline

You're not alone, lol! I have get a loom free to warp it up (I've just warped up for other projects) and then I have to work out which pattern I'm going to try and follow. I really fancy the one on Weavezine, but will probably do something a bit more straightforward first. I'm not very good at counting warp threads, so it will be good discipline for me to actually follow something without getting too creative, ;-)!

The instructions that Ashford include with their second heddle are on their website here. It shows you how to do Summer and Winter and a double weave blanket. It might let you get started.

I think you're right. :-)  Though I had my Harp warped for the project, I used the wrong heddle (thought I had the 8, but had the 10 - doesn't work on worsted weight!) and I changed my mind as to what I was going to make.  So back to square one!

Anyone have a catalog from this defunct company?  Would pay shipping and copying costs.  Thanks!

thanks for that - as it happens my "kit" is all ashford so those came with - though . . .not sure about the "summer & winter" pattern I'll need to look again.

Thumper70 (not verified)

warp it up & play - that's more or less what I did - I made a narrow band (now used as a book mark) and played with combinations of up & down to get a sense of what happens where. I think the only mistake I made was that my warp & weft were the same colour. I think the next attempt will have two or even three colours to help distinguish what's happening - and what caused it.

Thumper70 (not verified)

I too was intimidated by warping - but once I *got it* that warping is a part of the weaving process - it no longer felt so overwhelming. It also helped that I experimented with different warping methods, thus finding the one that is best for me and the way I work. Now - i can warp up my loom (ashford 80cm) relatively quickly.

I am excited to see people exploring two harnesses. I have the harnesses and am looking for instructions beyond being able to use finer yarns. Would love to know if Liz Gipson's book has those resources.

There's a book called Textures and Patterns for the Rigid Heddle Loom by Betty Linn Davenport. This thing costs $75 on Amazon. Don't buy it. You can go to your local library and get it through what's called Interlibrary Loan. Most libraries participate. They'll get it for you for free. I have the book and it's not worth $75. But it is a good book.

Oh whine! You travel most the year in a 40' mobile home??!!? That's my life's dream...take my looms and hit the road...sigh. I hate having to work. It keeps interrupting my life.

I got a small rigid heddle table loom at a gargae sale. I have no idea on how to warp it and use it. I will post a pic when I get one, soon. I'd like to use this but am used to my bigger floor looms. It looks alot like the one pictured above. I thought is was missing parts but see in that pic it has about the same things mine does. How do you weave on those?? The thing of it is mine has "sticks" on both ends with strings tied to them to put the warp on.

Hi DJ

There has been a new edition of Textures and Patterns put out, and it is under $30 new, often with free shipping. The new version has been updated in color, and has new content. It is a fantastic resource, and I am so happy that I bought it.
