I have a new to me 8 harness Leclerc Nilus II and have finally gotten it put together. BUT the treadling is really hard - on the first two treadles I have to stand up to get the harnesses to go up at all. I may have done something wierd when we put it together. Any sugestions? Also - is anyone using the back hinge treadles with a Nilus? Wondering how it works. Looks like for another $1000 I can fix this problem, but I'd love not to invest any more.... Thaks.

I just answered a similar problem on Ravelry.  If your bench is too low, the treadling will seem very heavy indeed.  The Nilus II is taller than the Nilus, so will most likely require a higher bench.  Your forearms should easily clear the breast beam and you hips should be higher than your knees.  This allows you to depress the treadles with your quadriceps, not your calf muscles.  If you are having trouble with the two left hand treadles, it may be that there is less mechanical advantage at that end, closest to the hinge.  You can change your tie-up and treadling so that the lightest shafts, or the ones you use the least are located there.
