I want to weave some placemats. I have picked out the pattern I want to use for the middle, but I want to add a plain weave border all the way around. How do I do this? Do I have to rearrange the treadling/threading to be able to do plain weave? Have a 4S/6T floor loom.

The draft I want to do is from Handweaving.net Draft # 47080 from Franz Donat Bindungs-Lexikon fur Schaftweberei Page 21 Figure 17.

Thanks for any help,

Respectfully, Leigh

If you want plain weave plus a pattern, you need two additional shafts.  Instead of plain weave, you can use something from the pattern.  If it is a twill structure (I don't belong to handweaving.net) you can just add some runs of straight twill on either side.

You'll only be able to do plain weave at the beginning and at the end of your placemats.  For the side borders, I would do like Laura suggested and just do a couple of runs of straight twill.

Hi, Leigh,

You could also pickup then plain weave portions of the design using a pickup stick, in that case, I suggest I suggest not threading the border threads thru any heddles, only the reed.
