I found a wonderful book in my travels entitled Tejido Huave and Beyond by Erica de Ruiter. I wanted to try this technique, it really intriqued me. It is a semi pick-up weave of Mexican origin on 3 or 4 shafts. I really like the look of Mexican, South American and Central American weaves.
The first towel I made was the tree design sample in the book, using a green slub cotton for the design. The tree turned out a little bumpy because I used a slub yarn. I drew up a fish design and wove it using lime green cotton and silk yarn for the pick-up areas. There was not enough contrast between the design and the background of the natural and cream cotton and linen blend I used for the warp. I then outline embroidered the fish with a contrasting green and added beads. I am definitely going to do more of this type of weaving. It was fun and there are numerous possibilities.
