Notes

This is double-faced supplementary weft patterning which I learned in Santa Catarina Barahona in Guatemala. The design is exactly the same on both sides of the fabric and all ends are hidden within the weave.

The women in this town cover the upper panels of their blouses-huilpiles-with this kind of weft patterning in bright and vibrant colors. The other panels are decorated with single-faced weft patterning. They weave small rectangles covered in the double-faced patterning with bird, flower and fruit motifs, add a draw string along one edge and this serves as a hat for their babies.

I have used this piece as the cover of the journal which I wrote to document this technique-which I have just realized I posted once before with another book cover!!! .
