Hi everyone,

I am warping a floor loom (a Harrisville 22"/8-shaft loom) for the first time.  I'm following Deborah Chandler's Learning to Weave book, warping front to back, and have gotten as far as tying on to the front apron rod.  At first I tied the warp threads really tight and noticed that this was pulling up the shafts, with the top of the heddle eyes resting directly on the threads.  I loosened it enough so that the shafts didn't rise up, but now when I raise any of the shafts, the top threads in the shed are extremely loose and sag while the bottom threads are tight.  I tried Googling to find an answer, but it appears the usual problem with jack looms is the opposite, where the top threads are tight and the bottom ones are loose.  I assembled the loom from a kit.  I don't know if I put the loom together incorrectly or if I've warped it incorrectly.  I don't if the picture below helps (it's not great), but it seems like the threads might angle down a bit sharply from the bottom of the reed to the eyes of the heddles--maybe the shafts need to hang higher?  I'm hoping this will make sense to someone with a lot more experience--can anyone help?

and ask them how high the shafts should be from the floor.  If that is correct, then you need to adjust the length of the treadle cords.

That did not occur to me--thank you Joanne!! :)

On the Harrisville, the heddle eyes should be about halfway below a string pulled straight from the front to back beams, half the distance between the heddle eyes and the heddle bar, maybe 2".  Adjust this height using the side tie up linked chain.  If you are pulling the warps too tight, they will lift the shaft frames up too high and they will either jump off the shaft frame hooks or just wear out your warps.

Thank you, sequel!  I had forgotten about those adjustment chains.  I rehooked them to shorten the distance between each harness cable and lamm cable (I hope I'm remembering the correct names for those cables) and all is well.  The sheds are clear and I'm good to go.  I appreciate your help!

Digital teamwork overcomes all obstacles. ;-)

I just finished mounting a 6 treadle conversion kit on an old 4 treadle Harrisville.  The instructions said the top of the shafts should hang around 8 1/2" down from the lower edge of the top castle crosspiece.
