Hi all;  I am about a 2 year Weaver.  I am becoming more experienced, but still run into difficulties reading and interpreting drafts.  I use the Handweaver’s Pattern Directory, by Anne Dixon, all the time, and am usually pleased with the results.  I am wondering if there is an error in the threading draft in page 108, overshot, star and rose.  I made placemats using the middle design, and one side of the design is missing a piece.  Of course, it is very possible that I made a mistake threading, it I check my work a lot, and think I would have noticed it as I repeated the sequence.  I have added a picture of my finished piece.  I would like to try the top design, and if there is a mistake, it would really show up in that design.  Any help would be welcome.  Thanks!

Hi Sue:

It sounds like you did not centre the project with the design. Sometimes the left side might only use 1/2 (or partial) the repeat to be symetrical. Weaving software helps solve this as you can design the cloth for as many repeats as needed across the width, then add a partial repeat to balance it. Most of these texts are not project books (not like Handwoven Magazine articles), they are drafts with swatches. Luckily, this book gives yarns used and resulting swatches when woven and finished. :)

I have also wove the main design as deflected doubleweave (DDW). I treated the draft as a profile and threaded and tied it up for DDW.

Thanks, ReedGuy, for your suggestions.  I just don’t think that was the problem.  I always calculate the numbers of threads in a pattern and make sure I center my design.  I may not be explaining the problem correctly. The mistake is a recurring one, that is in each repeat of the design.  On each side of what you labeled the balance draft, there should be three repeats of the lines that curve from top to bottom.  I have 2 on one side, and three on the other, in each repeat of the pattern.  I have also checked my notes from the project, to see if I copied the threading sequence incorrectly,   but that doesn’t seem to be the issue either.  I appreciate your help; if you think of anything else, please let me know.

ReedGuy, I just noticed something else.  The draft that you sent, matches the threading in the book.  But the computerized visual of the pattern only shows 2 lines on either side of the center design, where the picture in the book shows 3.  Why I got 3 and 2, I don’t know, but maybe the problem is in the picture rather than the diagram.  Again, thanks for the help.

Hi Sue, it looks like the book has added an extra block A and C. It should have ended 6 ends short. :) I notice in my 4 shaft draft I did a long while ago, I had corrected this. I had to follow the book just now to compare and found the error. :)

Thanks so much for following up with this.  Now all I have to do is figure out how to translate what you said in order to alter the draft.  ;) As long as I know there is an issue, I think I can get it. Thanks again.

Just follow my draft there, the extra on the end between the lines is to balance at the far left when you have added as many repeats you want for the width. Happy weaving. :)

Thanks!  I know I’ll figure it out.  I’m just glad someone else found the irregularity.
