I have a number of treadles lams and jacks from a previous Varpa loom.  The TOIKA and Varpa share a lot of similarities, they are heavy birch, similar style and construction, the braking systems are almost identical, the cloth aprons the same and the proportions almost the same.  I love the density of the wood, I am a rough and tumble weaver yet I loathe too many dings and dents!  These looms are hardy!  One thing I noticed is the lams on the Varpa are much shorter, the height of the breast beam a little lower and the lams are actually about 2 inches shorter.

I recently set up my TOIKA Eeva using marked texsolv tie ups, unlike the Glimakra the proportions are quite different so the usual method of moving up every 3 texsolv holes does not work.  I also noticed that the holes in the treadles are narrower and require a threading hook.  I actually installed some eye hooks and used metal rods to secure the texsolv (see picture).  This method is easy peesy!  Fast and more comfortable than crawling under the treadles.

Dawn, are you saying you are using some varpa lamms/treadles on your toika, or that you've got some varpa spare parts lying about?

Dawn McCarthy

Yes, I have CM jacks, a treadle and numerous lams.  I do not use them on my Toika as a) my Toika is complete and b) there is a marginal difference in lam length and placement of the holes which would not quite line up.

I have a Toika Liisa from the early Seventies, bought second hand several years ago in excellent, lightly used, condition. Still has the original linen cloth on it.

That's a great idea to use cup hooks and rods on the top of the treadles - would make tying up much easier.  What length are the rods you used, and do they have a special name?

I used 2 1/2 inch eye screws with washer and nut - the rods I used to secure the treadle ties (texsolv) are lingoes and are temporary - I will be ordering the treadle hooks from LeClerc in the near future.  I find this much faster to adjust than threading through each hole and securing under the treadle.

Thanks Dawn for the explanation of your temporary treadle tie up system.  I hadn't heard of treadle hooks before, or lingoes.  Will see what's available in Australia.
