Hello,

I'm new to weaving and thought that it would be fun to weave a beach towel.  What type of cotton would you recommend?

I would use unmercerized cotton.  Interweave's magazine Top Ten Towels on 8 shafts has a bathtowel in waffle weave that looks absolutely wonderful and it uses 8/2 unmercerized cotton.  Cotton Clouds sells a great unmercerized cotton thread called Aurora Earth.  If you would like a bright towel for the beach, take a look at Lunatic Fringe's unmercerized cotton.  The colors are absolutely gorgeous.
