I've been looking for a draft to do a diamond twill on the rigid heddle. Does anyone have any recommendations, books, websites, etc?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Erica

What are you referring to as diamond twill?  Goose eye?  Do you have pictures or a drawing so we can see it?

Here's what I've done on my 8 shaft, this weave can also be done on 4 shafts. So maybe using 2 heddles and a pick up stick or string heddle pick up?

claudia (not verified)

That is lovely.  I believe that you need 2 heddles on the RH loom to do a twill pattern.  Others are probably more knowledgeable about this..

I would enjoy trying it on the RH.

I too am interested and found this interesting blog post...  And this.

My main problem is figuring out the sett!  Oh well, into the fray I go!

claudia (not verified)

The best way to figure out the sett is to start with what the sett calculator gives you and then sample, sample, sample.

Read more here.

There are tons of other discussions on Weavolution about sett, some by very experienced weavers. Try doing a search in the forums and lots of very valuable information comes up. Some people who have written books about it and are offering their sage advice here, for free, you don't need to buy the book if you need an answer now.

You can do a twill on rigid heddle with info on 4 Harness conversion

It is posted in another message thread

Have a good day!

I'm doing something similar to this pattern right now - first time experiment - I'm using string heddles (I warp up as usual, then remove the RH reed/heddle at the last minute - it's working great.

I got my pattern here: http://www.handweaving.net/Patterns.aspx

Hi,

Can you take and post a couple pictures so we can see what you mean about the string heddles?  I imagine it's similar to how I have my Navajo loom warped to use both sheds there but I'm having a hard time imagining it on the RH loom.

All the drafts on handweaving.net are in the public domain so you can post it here or in your notebook (in My Stuff) for everyone to see.

And, if you have had picture problems we have a nice YouTube video for you here.

Thanks CreativeWhimsy, I have seen both these blogs before, but I think I always came across them in diferent search sessions. I think between the two of them, I can piece together the threading for the diamond twill. Now the question is do I try it with the colour gamp project, or do I go ahead with the current draft for that and muck about with the twill designs later. Maybe I can turn my colour gamp into a dual gamp (colour and twill)! Hmm how adventurous am I feeling and how much thinking do I want to have to do!

Cheers,

Erica

Hi Claudia,

I've just posted a pic and some notes on my string heddle experiment on my "projects" page - you can also see more notes and some links that got me started on my blog by clicking here. Unfortunately I'd already taken my sample off the loom when I saw your message - however - I promise next project I'll have more "process" pics (like what I did for my persian rug project).

Erica J

That would be awesome! I visted your blog, what great rugs!

Hi Erica, Colour Gamp in RH Twill..... You are brave!  My attempt at twill was sabotaged by bad yarn choice.  Well not the yarn but the colours. The twill doesn't show with the tweedy and variegated yarn I chose. It is a beautiful scarf with wonderfully muted colours but the twill is not evident.  I now have some 3/2 pearl cotton from Christmas that I will try out.  Hopefully it won't take me three tries to warp up this time!

Don't be too disillusioned by your twill experiment. It's not always about looks. A twill fabric will drape and handle a lot differently than plain weave and may still be wonderfully pleasing!

Erica J

I highly recommend a colour gamp project, especially if you have a favorite yarn you like to work with! The gamp shows you all the possibilities you have to choose from! I'm only through the blues so far, and have already seen some incredible combinations that I would never have thought would be pleasing!

Good luck with your next project.

Cheers,

Erica

sorry to have taken so long to respond to your note. thanks too for your kind words.

Erica J

I figured out how to do a straight twill on 2 heddles and thought I'd show you all how that's going.

I found a pattern for another twill on 3 shafts, that I think I've converted to a diamond twill pattern, that will be my next test!

Thanks for all your help folks,

Erica

Super!!! How about leading a weave along for this??-but give eveyrone time to order their second heddle!!

very pretty!

very interested to hear how you did it.

Erica J

I could probably lead a WAL on this, but it would have to March at the earliest! If we started advertising now that would give everyone plenty of time to order a second heddle! :)

bolivian warmi

That sounds perfect!! Thank you.

Count me in on a WAL - I already have my 2nd heddle kit and heddles.

March or a bit later suits me perfectly.

Thanks!

Erica J

So are we thinking a 2 heddle twill WAL late March early April? If this sounds good, I'll put together a post about what folks will need, including recommended threads, sett and potential projects.

Cheers,

Erica

Yep.That sounds good. I already have my second heddle too but the late March/early April  plan suits me.

Anyone else in?

Laverne

I'm in for March. Works perfectly with my schedule.  And, I have my second heddle and want to do a twill, for sure.

Thanks,

Claudia

I am so surprised but yes the twill does feel and drape wonderfully delicious!  It took me 'til now to actually wet finish it and I have gifted it for valentines day!

CreativeWhimsy (not verified)

This turned out gorgeous! I can't wait to see how you did this.  I have been struggling with a new twill project but although it is pretty it does not look to be twill!

I definitely will tune in to the WAL

Hi Erica,
the colors are lovely!

I'm trying to figure out 2/1 threading and have seen different diagrams. In some a single slot carry double threads and in others a hole is skipped and each slot has a single thread. I'd be grateful if you were willing to show the treading diagram for your setup for this one.

Best greetings from North Sweden,
Lisa

I ended up leading a weave a long for folks who wanted to weave twill on their rigid heddles. The explanation and threading diagram for the diamond twill on a rigid heddle is here.

let me know if you have any other questions!

I found the forum thread. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Erica!

endorph

rigid heddle. I have adapted several 4 shaft patterns for fairly easy weaving on the RH loom and love doing 8 shaft pinwheels on the RH. Just takes a little determination and patience!

Erica J

You are very welcome. I only own narrow rigid heddles now, but I am happy to answer any questions.

happy weaving,

Erica

Hello Erica, I just found this website today and have been browsing rigid-heddle conversations "threads". I have never weaved before but just ordered a Schacht Flip 20" from Halcyon Yarn. It hasn't even shipped yet but I can't wait to start playing and creating. How did you do this piece? What yarns? How long is the piece and what is your loom? This piece is really lovely and I would love to try something like this, looks like a color gamp? Did you follow a pattern or just make this up? Inquiring minds....

Thanks! :)

We had a rigid hedle weave a long several years ago. We discussed weaving 3 shaft twills then. So hopefully this thread will help you.
