I would like to weave belts on my inkle loom. Does any one have a recommendation for a yarn that will have some body?  I tried to weave a strap for a bag I made from 3/2 perle cotton and the strap was pretty limp.

Since I don't see anyone answering this, I'll take a shot at it.

Think rep weave or any other warp faced weave.  That means, use a fine thread (10/2 or so) for the warp and space it densely.  For the weft, use a heavy and somewhat stiff thread.   Maybe a heavy linen or even something like a plastic or polyester chord would work. Or,maybe use the same thing that is used for a rug warp or tapestry warp.

That will give you stiffness to keep the belt at it's given width, but flexibility to curve and bend along its length.  Note that for a true warp faced weave, you don't even see the weft, except at the edge, so colors are not a problem.

I don't know anything about Inkle looms, so toss some salt over your shoulder here. For a belt, I would use herringbone twill and line linen warp/weft. 16/2 with a sett of 32 epi or if you want heavier 12/2 or 8/2 and adjust the sett. Packs nice and tight and not airy. Very strong and no stretch. It's used as chair webbing.

See my projects, I'm weaving 32 yards of linen chair webbing. Mine is 2.25" in the loom. I'm on a floor loom.

I'm just not sure what an inkle is capable of.
