Hello all

I'm relatively new to weaving, still trying to problem solve certain things. I've been having issues with my warp not having even tension, and being especially tight on the sides, which is scewing my weft. Can anyone explain what I might be doing wrong, or how I can ensure the warp has even tension. I warp back to front and use lease sticks.. Thanks!

It may be due to your use of packing material.

If your warp is not cylindrical, but thinner at the edges, that means that you have shorter warp threads at the edges - and they keep getting tighter as you weave.

Using warp sticks would be the best way to observe your warp on the beam. Avoid corrugated or very heavy paper - it can hide the spreading that causes the warp roll to thin at the edge.

Another factor may be the % of draw in you are having.  The challenge with weaving is that there are oftentimes a variety of things that may be happening, not just one.

To see if Laura is right (which sounds quite likely) compare the width of the woven cloth with the width of the warp in the reed.  If the woven cloth is much narrower, then try throwing a series of picks while leaving loose loops at both selvedges (edges).  This won't make a very nice cloth, but it will relieve the pressure on the selvedge threads.  Once you have the cloth back to the proper width, you can then begin to reduce the size of the loops until you're weaving nice selvedges again without excessive draw in.
