I'm planning some 4 harness overshot on my 16 harness AVL Folding Dobby (with Compu Dobby IV). I've never used only 4 of the harnesses before... should I do anything special or expect a problem? Thanks,Mary

I use fewer than 16 shafts regularly on my Toika dobby - if you have no heddles in use on a shaft, it shouldn't cause any problems.

I frequently wove on fewer than 16 on my AVL - never any problems, they just sit dormant.

Once I used 4 of the 16 shafts on my AVL folding dobby loom and it worked well. This was a highly unusual threading and I had not figured out how to weave the 4-shaft fabric using more than 4. That warp showed me that the concept was good, the fabric felt nice, design was subtle. So I worked on it some more and used 12 shafts the next time, which let me weave examples of both 4-shaft and 12-shaft drafts.

I have woven several warps of 16-shaft overshot. It was fun. You can always use a tie-up of 2/2/ repeated over 16 if you want the 4-shaft version. Spend a little time with weaving software and see what you can do with 8-shaft and/or 16-shaft overshot on the same warp as the 4-shaft.

I don't have problems running fewer than the 32 shafts available on my LeClerc Weavebird. There is no reason on the WB to remove heddles on unused shafts. Like Bonnie, I am more apt to spread out the threading over the available shafts to have more pattern options for additional pieces.
