Dear Friends,

I have a brand new Louet Jane loom that I bought for traveling to workshops.  I will be flying with my Jane this summer.  The Jane does not fit within the dimensions of carry on luggage, so I must send it checked baggage.  Even though it is very compact, I have looked in vain for a piece of luggage big enough for it.   Every piece is too small by one dimension (height or length or width) I have thought about making a double walled corrugated cardboard box for it.  Does anyone have a more attractive less labor intensive suggestion?

I have heard rom others that it meets carry on dimensions but I guess not. I'm afraid the box may be your only option. The UPS store may have a heavy walled box to meet your needs. Does the box it came in work? Claudia

Which size is your Jane?

Have you tried an online search for luggage in odd sizes? Have you tried a sporting goods place like Duluth Trading that has various backpacks and duffles?

What about Calumet cases, that photographers use for their lighting gear?

P.S. please post the dimensions—

I have Jane's predecessor, the Kombo.  I cut down a heavy corrugated box, lined it with a foam "egg-crate" type mattress pad cut to size.  I have been using it for about 10-12 years.  It was worth the initial effort to produce, as I feel the loom is well protected.  It has so many iterations of packing tape, duct tape, airline tape, etc. it is probably stronger now than when I made it.  Good luck.

Dear Friends,  according to this website, my loom is too big to be considered a carry on.  The loom measures
(22 3/8 x 29 1/2 x 6”)  these are the dimensions for the smaller width loom.. the 15 3/4" size.
I got my loom spring before last, so the box was recycled then. Sally, I looked at Calumet's, but they do not have any cases that are wide enough for the loom.  The double walled box with foam egg crate sounds like my only option.  Glad to know that you have had success with building your own loom case.  Thank you!

I recently traveled with both a guitar and mandolin and encountered no issues.  With the popularity of plane side checked carryons I've wondered about boxing and taking as a carry on with the thought that if the plane is full and there is no room than the loom could be checked plane side and actually not got lost in luggage land.  Although, on the same trip with the instruments, my traveling companion checked a bag at plane side and when we got to our layover they sent it through baggage claim which meant that we had go collect it and then spent our 8 hour layover at the airline checkin since it was an overnight layover.  I now always check to make sure that planeside checked bags are brought back up upon deboarding.

Gail,

Do you have a solution? (Your plane leaves next week!)

Hi Sally, I think I am going to leave my Jane at home, and bring a Dorothy instead.  I dont like the idea of warping wire on my brand new Jane.  Plus the Dorothy will fit in a suitcase.  For additional harnesses, I will bring materials to do Andi's Amazing Contraption.  If that is not practical for weavig with wire, I will just use the 4 harnesses.  I will still learn alot regardless of the amount of harnesses I have on my loom.
