Hi Cheryl,

  Good to hear from you.  I love your picture of the towels. I checked out your website when Michael answered my questions on durability.  I have a big warping mill, so I won't have any problem making a nice long warp.  I am going to have to take a lesson on making a long warp with fine threads, and dressing the loom.  I've woven a few things over several years, taken some workshops, but neglected Weaving 101.  The result is that I can weave reasonably well, straight selvedges, using a temple, but still pretty shakey on the warping   My next project will be towels.  I have 6" left on my rugs presently on the loom.  I should get them finished today if all goes well. 

   Your towels are inspiring me to join you in weaving some of my own.

Janet, one thing Cheryl's tells her students is to make lots of short warps (3 yards). On this warp you can get 2+ dish towels. Practice dressing your loom (back to front) with short warps untill you are unerring. It take Cheryl and I (yes, I help) about 10 mintues to put on the 17 yard warp(of course we have been doing this for 30 years). (Cheryl still has to stey the heddles and reed. Depending on her mood she can dress the loom with a dish towel warp in under an hour).  Then try a long warp with your 8/2 cotton (which is easier to control then a fine thread). There are some great videos on weaving 101 on utube and on some of the weavers web sites here on Weavolution. If you want to know the steps Cheryl and I use just ask.

You're right, I should make a bunch of short warps to practice.  Three yard warps would give me a chance to try different weave structures, and practice tying up my treadles. 

Boy, that sure sounds short.  I made a nine yard warp for my rugs.  I'm on my fourth rug, though I have to admit that I don't know how long each rug will be when I take them off the loom.  I guessed they will be about 60" each when they relax.  The fourth one will be short.  I'm thinking of a carpet bag made from that one.

Janet, do you have a copy of MPD book? Cheryl has her students make a twill sampler. This shows them how you can get a difference look with the same warp just by changing the treading.
