Hey all-- I'm finally getting ready to wind that Lotte Dalgaard inspired collapse weave warp. Alternating stripes of linen and overtwisted wool.  I guess I'll wind each stripe as it's own chain and combine them, especially with the active yarns. Does anyone have any pears of wisdom to share here?

thanks!

Probably a little late for a response. I was down in Maryland at the sheep and wool festival. Which is OK, because I really have no advice beyond what Lotte describes. She is quite thorough.

Is the warping done? How did it go?

I am also curious  .

I think I can start Lottes Festväv in two weeks. So, if there are some preventable experiences......;O)

I just cut the last weave off my loom. I agree Lotte is very thorough, my main question is getting the warp from the warping mill to the loom!  I'm going to do something similar to the one on the cover of the book to get my feet wet, stripes of linen and overtwisted wool. I 'll wind each linen section separately since they're different colors. But the wool?  I'll definitely wind each stripe by itself. What I"m unsure of is then what. Do I chain it the way I would usually (the warp is around 3 yards or meters), Do I keep it under tension and wind it on a stick? Or do I do what we did at the workshop here in Austin and wind it on a 3 lb clamp?  At that workshop we left the active yarn hanging on it's big clamp in the back, I think I will take the plunge and try to beam it though.  But if anyone has any thing to say about that part, let me know. Lotte is silent :)   I'll have to see what Anne Fields says, I haven't looked there yet.

Hey Kristina..  once we get these first ones under out belts, let's do a Collapse Weave WAL.....

I kept it under tension, winding onto a cardboard roll and beamed it using a warping valet. No problems.

Kristina, what is Lottes Festvav? Is it in her book?

Debbie

Oh that's good.. I use a trapeze/warping valet already... sounds like this will fall into place.

And Lotte's Festväv is in a back issue of Väv.. I don't happen to have it right here. Kristina got the yarn pack from Väv.. I have it too so it's in the queue...marie

Yes, I'd love to, depending on timing. Once school is out for the summer, weaving goes a little more slowly. I do have a stash of Habu and handspun overtwist calling out, though...

Excellent! Can't wait to see what you and Kristina come up with!

Have any of you tried handspun yarns in warp?

ingamarie

I have, but I mixed with millspun since it was a singles. You might check in with the 'Handspun Handwoven' forum and group on Weavolution too!

I've used handspun yarns as warp, but not overtwist ones so far.

I'm using really fine yarns for collapse and would be worried about inconsistencies in handspun causing broken warp threads, so I'm thinking weft for now. If I were to try it, I would probably start with 100% silk for strength.

There is plenty of literature out there with moderate thickness of overtwist handspun used as warp. If you would like any references to these, just ask.

I have attended last year a workshop in Austria with Ann Richards. That was great. We used a lot of those different overtwisted yarns and could weave 8 different samples.  She will give this workshop again in July!! I have the book from Lotte Dalgaard as well. But this time my aproach is different. I do not want to use commercial yarns but I am especially interested to use handspun. (I put the question in that group as well). I had a 28/2 merino s in the warp and used both s and z-handspun in the weft. The results are encouraging sofar.

The material is much thicker than the commercial crepe yarns used by Lotte and Ann but still its interesting. Ingamarie what do you mean you mixed homespun with millspun? Was it alternating threads?

OMG! That's very cool. You know I just didn't focus on handspun for collapse weave!  silly me.  Mine wasn't collapse at all, but a blanket and that included some handspun in the weft. It's in my projects under LaLuz Blanket.

But your sample intrigues me, how heavy is your handspun, it's just beautiful-- the rumpledness of the collapse with the handspun look is just a lovely texture. Love it.
