HI. I have had my avl for about 4 years. I warp it about everyother month. I am not happy with the way I warp and was wondering if anyone has some helpfull hints. I have the avl raddle that is at the back and usually warp back there. I find I have a lot of tandled threads, and spend lots of time playing with the warp thread to straighten  it out. This is not my first loom I also have a Kessinah and warp that a different way. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks

Hi Lauries.  What kind of AVL loom do you have?  Since you're using the raddle, I assume you have a plain beam.  Can you include more information, such as how wide your warp is, how many bouts, do you use lease sticks when winding on, etc.  I assume you're warping B2F and you warp the Kessenich F2B?

I primarily warp B2F on all my looms and have a cross at the back.  I put lease sticks in the cross and pull the threads through the raddle and onto the warp rod, then wind it on.  I prefer to have weights on the warp bouts while doing this and especially like using my trapeze, but I don't have a long enough top board for it on my AVL (it's 60" wide).  I can usually get by with just winding a turn or two, then pulling hard on each bout.  If I'm having trouble with tangling I'll also shake the bouts to release the tangles.

You might also post this in the general weaving forum.  I can't imagine it's specifically an AVL issue, unless I've misread your question.

Sorry it took so long to put more information on. My  AVL is 40 inches wide and has a plan beam. I have been warping on the back. so I have been holding the warp at the back of the loom and my husband does the winding. I do B2F. I have deceided to try something new next time I warp. I wil do it like the Kessenich. Which is I hold the warp at the front of the loom going over the top,not threaded thru the heddles. I hold it tight and again my husband does the winding.

I use the back to front method described in Peggy Osterkamp's books and video. It's not specific to AVL looms, so you have to make a few adjustments. I always forget to load the raddle going the right direction, since the raddle only attaches one way. Otherwise, I really like this method.

Judy w, thanks for the book idea. I'll check it out next time I'm at my guild. Laurie

I just found this thread, so I'm at the party a little late! I also uses Peggy's method when beaming my baby wolf using the method she demonstrates on her DVD. She walks one through each step. During Convergence (it was wonderful to meet you!) I got Kati Reeder Meek's books, including the one on warping with a trapeze. So I'm also going to try it. I've heard so many great things about that method. Alison
