Art Works opens tapestries show

Art Works gallery in downtown Richmond recently opened "Landscapes of the Soul," a show of tapestries woven by Peruvian artist Maximo Laura.  Laura is a third-generation weaver from the Peruvian district of Ayachuco.  Each of his works tells a story, drawing on Andean mythological themes from Peru's cultures, ranging from the Incas to the Quechua Indians, descendants of the Incas.

In July, the Peruvian government presented Laura with the "Gran Premio Nacional Amauta de la Artisania Peruana," the highest award for textiles work in his country.  Laura's textiles are featured at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington.

The exhibition runs through Aug. 23 at 320 Hull St.  Hours are Tuesdy through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
