Hello to all! A point I like to stress when building your own equipment, is there is always more than one way to do something. If I were a rich person with all the resources to just keep buying tools than I would want to have at least a hundred Clamps! Any woodworker, or for that matter, any metal worker will always tell you that "You just never have enough clamps"! This is where one has to become inventive! All you need is a solid flat surface, and enough weight to hold things down! Remember I said inventive, not dangerous! Think it out first. Here are two pictures to demonstrate what I mean. In building a new seat for my Marquardsen countermarch loom I needed to laminate five oak boards together, and have a small arch in it to compensate for weight deflection. That would be my weight that deflects it! Ta-Da! My 4000 pound tractor with a nice straight bucket did the trick! I used what clamps I had to line things up,lowered the bucket, drove some wedges in to create the arch, and the glue did the rest! You don't need a bucket loader to do this, as any stable weight can work, cement blocks, bricks, rocks to name a few. The point here is, use what you have,be resourceful, and you will get great results! Regards, TheLoominary.

Yikes!  And here I thought my 6" C-clamps (used for many things) and 18" quick release clamps (used for many more things) were good-sized!  On to look in the garage for real equipment <g>

Frank, I just found this group. I am a woodworker too. Have built lots of furniture in the last 25 years. Was going to build my own loom until Micahel White steered me to a Glimakra for a steal. I am building my wife a small table top loom. I will make my own jigs and fixtures before I buy them. Like you, why buy something when I can make it for 1/10th the price and most of the time mine is lot better. Believe or not, I  have some woodworking tools that Abe Norman doesn't have. And, I'm not a yankee either, but my wife is. Now that I know of this group, I will for sure share my ideas for handmade weaving jigs, equipment and tools.........Steve.

Welcome Steve, sharing the knowledge is what it's all about. Looks like you'll be very busy.Don't forget to post some photos of your work. Perhaps others will become inspired to build equipment they might not have considered. Frank.
