How long are your skeins you're making for the class? 1 yard, 2 yard? Do you do any ties? Thanks for your input.

Mine are 1/2 yd. because longer skeins can be harder to move around.

Is a skein weighing 4.9 g close enough? Is there a way you tie the skein like a big skein or is it unnecessary?

Sure.  By definition 5g skeins will vary from 4.9 to 5.1g  and more variation won't hurt.

There are two problems to deal with when dyeing skeins- eveness and tangling. Many loose figure 8 ties cut down on the tangling, the longer the skein the more ties needed.  These ties must be lose to allow the dye to penetrate everywhere even under the ties.  Tight ties acts as resists and keep the dye out and then we have to redye that color.
