Must-see places in the USA

FOR THOSE VISITING FROM HOT THREADS ON THE HOME PAGE.........

YOU ARE IN THE ''WEAVING TRIPS'' GROUP FORUM. THIS GROUP WAS STARTED ON SEP 10TH BY Jennieh105.

I have done a lot of weaving travel here in Latin America and have lots to share about that but I would also like to get some information from you.......

I am going to the US in a few months and would like especially to hear about museums with textile collections. I have been to the Textile Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian in DC and will certainly be returning there. Are there any others that you can recommend?

Do you know what regions you will be visiting?  This one is not strictly textile related, but I do think highly of it... The High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon.  It particularly has an outstanding collection of indian beadwork and basketry from the indians of the Columbia River Plateau.

The collection was put together by Doris Swayze Bounds, who donated it to the Museum, which in turn published this book. showing some of the exhibits and including some biographical information on Doris Swayze Bounds.  She was a bank president who lived in the region and collected these materials over her lifetime.

More information on this specific exhibit within the museum and Doris Swayze Bounds can be found in this description.

And, if you're really looking for a taste of the American west, try to time your visit to coincide with the Pendleton Roundup...

Claudia pointed me to this forum. I travel a lot for work, and try to incorporate some weaving stops, too. The USA is so big, where will you be based and how long are you here?

The Torpedo Factory is just outside Washington, DC and you can find a cooperative gallery of textile artists and weavers exhibiting and selling from that location. (www.torpedofactory.org/There is also a big guild based in the VA area (Potomac Weavers, www.potomaccraftsmenguild.org/instructors.htm) that you might want to check out. Some of their members might be the same weavers connected to the Torpedo Factory.

Let me know if you want more options within a wider radius of DC. Have fun!
