Scotland - ideas for a trip?

Hi,

I am going on a 3 weeks trip round Scotland, starting in Edinburgh, the first 3 weeks of June. Does anybody have suggestions for places of interest for a weaver? Yarn shops? Weaving studios? Other textile related places? I would much appreciate any ideas.

Ooh yes - three weeks? That'll be fantastic!

In June you might catch the degree shows at the art colleges, so you'd want to check the websites for Edinburgh College of Art and Glasgow School of Art (Duncan of Jordanstone's is usually in May).

In Edinburgh you should try and see the Dovecot Studios (tapestry weaving) where they have a gallery and also sometimes do tours of the studio. And visit Concrete Wardrobe on Broughton Street which sells lots of handcrafted designer goods, including handwovens.

Lots of galleries in both Edinburgh and Glasgow, but a good one for textiles is the Collins Gallery on Richmond Street in Glasgow. Also in June there is a funky textile show coming up at Dundee Contemporary Arts which involves weaving demos (I know because my guild has just been asked if we can supply weavers!)

For history there is New Lanark, the Verdant Works (jute mill) in Dundee, Stanley Mills just north of Perth and the Weaver's Cottage in Kilbarchan (nr Paisley, south of Glasgow). The Paisley Museum also has a room full of Paisley shawls and a demo loom. Up at House of Dun, a lovely little "stately home" near Montrose, there is a handweaver working in the outbuildings - he does reproduction historic fabrics and also sells handwoven linens.

I haven't posted links for these but you can find any of them by googling. And I'm sure I'll think of more options but I have to go and make dinner...
