Hi all,
I have a copper frame loom and would like to add heddles - 2 shafts, preferably. Anyone have some good pictures of a frame loom with such? I didn't build it, unfortunately, with the parts that come out of the top and overhang, and it's soldered.
Thanks!

Can I weave a tapestry on a regular weaving loom, or do I need a tapestry loom? What is a good tapestry book? Can I also weave a Navajo style rug with a regular loom?............Steve.
Hi Steve,
whether you can weave a tapestry on a floor loom depends on how wide your tapestry is in relation to your loom ( in my opinion) and how heavy your loom is. If you can get your tension high, and you can get a hard beat you maybe able to do it. Remember if you do a narrow sample, the wider piece will not beat as hard. I have done 3 / 10 inch wide tapestries done on a 36 in LeClerc and I used a tapestry beater, everything turned out very well. ( so I didn't weave in straight rows and didn't use the beater bar)
Now I only use a tapestry loom, there are many tapestry professionals who say it can't be done on a floor loom because of not getting tension tight enough, but I do know of a couple of tapestry artists who do. But don't know what kind of looms they use.
i do not know about Navajo Looms.
there are plans ( online) to build an Archie Brennan loom, it's a cooper loom, which works very well and inexpensive to build, for regular tapestry. Everything you need is at one of those big building stores:)
hope this helps,
Cathie
P.S. I agree with Claudia about Kathe Todd-Hooker's Tapestry 101, great book!
Hi Steve,
I have several books on Navajo style weaving and they all stress the use of a Navajo style loom. If you are weaving a Navajo style rug, it's a weft faced design on tightly spun wool with a sett of 8-10 epi, I imagine you could do it on a loom where you can get very high tension. I'm not an authority, just thinking out loud.
As for tapestry, there is a thread from several months ago on resources for tapestry weaving. I prefer Kathe Todd-Hooker's book, Tapestry 101. It's excellent and available from Kathe here. I have read others but favor this one.
