Hi all,

This is my first time weaving with soysilk. It's beautiful, it feels wonderful and it is much slipperier than anything I've used before. I'm using 10/2 at 24epi for warp and 10/2 for weft. The draft is my own twill based design with no floats longer than 3 threads.

The problem is no matter how carefully I beat, I end up with 30+ppi which hides too much of the painted warp. I'm guessing my sett is too loose, but I'm not sure that's the only factor.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Carie

Hi,  The soy based rayon I have is labeled as 16/2 and I didn't think there were too many different sources for it so you might double check the size.  Also even a 10/2  yarn needs to be sett about 30epi for twill according to the sett chart I have, so since you'r getting 30ppi it sounds like you need to resley into that neighborhood.  But since you're using a painted warp, how about reconsidering your weft to something even finer in addition to sleying closer in order to produce a more warp faced cloth, tabby or a 2/2 twill might help you  keep that warp more visible too.  Liese

Thank you Liese,

I changed the sett to 30 epi. I tried 20/2 cotton as weft, which didn't quite do what I wanted it to, but when I doubled it the warp popped out and the fabric feels nice.

I tried the 10/2 soysilk I bought to go with the warp but it was too close in color and value to some of the colors in it. So another lesson learned. Two skeins may look great together as skeins but not work out when woven :^}

The good news is the 10/2 is in the same color family as some of my other yarns so it waits to become a project another day.

Thanks again, Carie

Glad to read that things worked out with the new sett.  When I work with a variegated warp I like a dark(er) colour weft   better than lighter,  just my taste.   The interlacing of threads is really different than any other kind of colour blending isn't it?  Sometmes I just have to weave a wee bit to see how I like it.  I've read some of Bonnie Tarses' blogs to get colour interaction ideas.  She has done a lot with colourful & variegated warps.  The problem with giving you a link is that all these blogs have such similar titles that I have to actually go into eash one to know whose is who and it's time for farm work so just google her name.  Liese

Hi everyone,

I've woven a tablerunner using a 20/2 soysilk warp, and a Tencel weft. It looks and feels wonderful! however, everyone says all weaving should be wetfinished, and I don't know what to do with this piece. Can someone help me on this?  Thank You in advance...  Susan S.
