I have a large skein (17 ounces) of a unique alpaca yarn from Frontier Fiber Mill.   What makes it unique is that the fiber was processed so there would be long repeats of color in the yarn.  All the colors are natural from the fleece.  The intent was for knitters who like to have stripes without working at it.  I've held onto this skein for a couple of years, just waiting for an idea for a great project.  I've thought about knitting moebius scarves or something like that, but would really prefer to weave with it.  I just can't figure out what to weave!  I'd love to hear what my fellow Weavolution members would suggest for this yarn.

Is it spun tightly enough to use for warp?

Hi Tina,

Since you mentioned mobius scarves and you have recently joined the backstrap group, did you see the link there for a woven mobius shawl? You would probably need to spin your alpaca harder for it to work for you on the backstrap loom.

Here's the link..........

I love alpaca, and I love undyed wool/hair/fur, so I would suggest that you send it to me.  Heh-heh.

But seriously, folks... I would use it on one of my continuous-weave tri-looms, both for the interaction of colours and the nearly zero loom waste.  Or I'd put it on Weavettes (ditto the lack of loom waste) and have a bunch of different but coordinated squares/rectangles to put together into....something. Both would depend on the thickness of the yarn and how much fabric could be generated.

As one piece, rather than modular pieces, it looks like it would make a fun random plaid as warp and weft, if it's strong enough for warp.

I think so.  It's not loose looking at all, and feels firm when I tug on it.

Thanks Laverne.  I'd rather not add spin to it, but I'll keep backstrap weaving with alpaca in mind.

I think you're right that it would be beautiful on a tri-loom.  I have a couple of Hazel Rose's looms:  a square and a triangle.  I'm getting some good ideas from folks.  Thanks!

How long are the repeats?  Can you lay out the warp to look randomized?   If you make it a denser sett, you can have something that is more warp-faced and use a neutral weft that enhances the color of the warp.

I love the triangle loom idea.

I haven't unwound the skein to check the repeats yet, but was told they'd make nice sized stripes in a knitted sweater so we're talking way more than a few inches.  I like the idea of using a triangle loom the best, but I don't have one (well, not one big enough to make a shawl).  I think I'm going to have to put it on the swift to get a better look at it.
