Nakia I actually live  the hill country. More central than south Texas. We had quite the storm on Friday. Our backyard was ankle deep water, but luckily that only meant the dogs refused to go out there. We had no flooding under the back doe which sometimes occurs.

I hope one you fared well this weekend!

Lace loom

Happy Halloween everyone!

i didn't get more work in on my tapestry. I was really hoping to find time the past couple of days but it didn't happen. I did make a couple of various sized Tenerife lace looms. Needle lace is kind of similar to tapestry, but without so much fun color changes.

The photo is one of the lace looms, and a little bobbin that I made for Thor's house. The needle weaving is quite fun.

I look forward to practicing my tapestry this year so I have more to share next Halloweave!

centrl Texas - the storms the past two weeks have been scary at times!

Cathie - you did a great job with your House. I have loved lurking in the shadows and watching all of the great tapestry work being done here!

A late Happy Halloween to all, pleased to see that everyone has been making good progress

I've been too busy weaving to write about it but I have made very good progress today and finally have something to post.  This was the view yesterday

And by this afternoon

And very late tonight

Still quite a lot of finishing to do but I've learned so much -

Tapestry is much slower than I ever imagined, it's important to decide at the beginning which will be the right side - I realised about a third of the way in that the back side was much neater than the front so pulled all the ends through to the other side with a crochet hook and ended up with a mirror image of what I had planned, I guess that's why professional weavers work from the back. Contrast between the yarn colours is very important and I wish I had made the tree darker or the hills lighter.  I need to practice a lot more so that I can get straight lines where I want them and good transitions from one colour to the next.

Best of all, it hasn't put me off and I want to try something else, hopefully there will be some improvement.  But before I try something else, I'm going to finish this piece properly and mount it so that I will be able to refer back to my first tapestry, I do wish I'd done the same with my first skein of handspun wool

Louiseinoz,

such a beautiful job you've done! I think a remarkable amount has been accomplished in only a month, quite a bit going on in this piece you're working on ! As far as working on the front or on the back, I first learned to work on the back. Very fine weft, I did a couple that way. The only problem my loom , really wasn't a loom but a concocted plexiglass curved frame, where I could not see the front, so it was such a surprise when I cut it off and saw the front! Mostly my slits were too wide,  so when I sewed them up, they pulled in the selvedges:( I know artists who weave both ways. My favorite and most accomplished teachers weave from the front. I've never asked them why though!

we're talking about having a tapestry study group on Weavolution, after the 1 st of the year. Maybe you all would like to join? It will be very, very loose:) I'm thinking of things like designing cartoons, working with color, techniques, joins, or if people wanted to work on their own projects, or follow a sampler in a book , that would be fine too. It would be a sense of community where we could ask questions And share.  I guess, they are talking about " formal deadlines" every two months, we could decide how we want to do it though.

something to think about:)

to all of you who participated in this house.  I've enjoyed watching your work progress.  I have never considered tapestry weaving, but now you all have me a little intrigued by it!

Mutz

I would love to join a tapestry study group, it would give me some direction to learning tapestry. Do you know what the group will be called? I will try to remember to look for it around the first of the year.

That would be terrific Mutz! Oh, it will be something terribly original and creative live like Tapestry Study Group, lol, I'll have to do a little better than that:) you'll know by the title though:)

Cathie

P.S. There's a thread going on now with people batting around ideas for study groups in case you all haven't seen it!

oh, De'Andrea, someone suggested one for bandweaving:)

Ahh yes Mutz, I have been to & through the hill country many times. First time was back in the early 1980s when hubby & I took a trip to Lost Maples State Park. We snooped about all over that part of our state. Hubby had relatives in the area (Kerrville & Austin) & had been several times before. Later yrs was while riding on my hubby's truck he drove for 5 yrs between 2000 to 2005.

Glad you didn't get any more than that as in flooding. I so know what it is like to have my hime flooded & hope I never have it happen again. We didn't get all the heavy rains they predicted. 3 to 4"s was about it & was plenty at one time.

I also understand the water coming in across the floors. Our house sits on a 3" slab foundation barely off the ground. The property slopes to the channel that goes into the lake behind us. So when the ground is saturated the runnoff comes right in. The only thing we have been able to do to keep it out is to keep a small trench dug around the foundation for it to go down the 5' alleyway between our house & garage that also slopes down to the channel. My Mom just had to have this place. So we bought it for her in 1995 and she never had any trouble with the floors flooding while she lived here. In 2005 we had a flood of 5 1/2 ft of water here that stayed in the house for 11 days. That was part of the hurricane Katrina saga which destroyed New Orleans 2 weeks later! After that we started having the floor floodings at times, I think due to so much silt leveling the yard off from the flood.

Anyway, we lived over it. Repaired the damage & deal with the rest. Cool

Nakia

loiuseinoz, your windows are fantastic!! That will be an awesome tapestry when you finish it. Laughing Very nice weaving and great coloring. We must have updates along the way of your progress. Cool

Nakia

Yes Cathie, I did see that about band weaving. I do believe it was my internet friend Francine ([email protected]) who suggested it. She had mentioned to me previously that she was considering starting a study group. She hadn't decided what style at that time. I will be very excited to join the band loom study group as well as a tapestry group you will be starting! I am very glad you plan to officiate our tapestry group and that it will be laid back & not pressing for deadlines. Time is not my friend when it comes to my hobbies I would rather enjoy than work. But alas, they do not pay my bills or keep us all fed. LOL Hopefully in 3 to 5 yrs I will be able to retire & then everyone stand back & watch the "Texas Whirlwind" I will be stirring up as I whizz through all my unfinished projects. Cool

Hubby will retire this coming year~~he thinks! I'm not liking that too much so far. You could say I'm a bit jealous?~~Innocent I have already put a few subliminal suggestions in his ear to get a part-time job. Wink

Oh Mutz I almost forgot to comment on your circle weavings. Very pretty!! I tried awhile back to do a little circle weaving, didn't make my loom like you tho. I tried 2 different sizes of my circular knittng looms (I don't like knitting on the circle ones) which are supposed to work quite well. Undecided Mine on the other hand did not look too good and I scrapped that idea for a future try when I find time to devote to working out the kinks.

I love your looms you made, very nice indeed. I have done some woodworking in the past. It sure can mess things up if you don't watch those grains. Wink Hubby is my main woodworker, I'm not as fond of cutting things out. I have done some plaques in wood burning, but it is such a slow process.

louiseinoz

I spent some time last night finishing off the loose ends on my tapestry and after spending up big at IKEA on a $5.99 frame, mounted it so as not to forget my first tapestry. It makes a  difference to finish it off properly and I can sit back and work out which bits worked well and which I would do differently next time.

I like the idea of a somewhat laid back tapestry group with longish deadlines.  I tend to start working harder when the deadline is close, I used to think it was because I just procrastinated too much but feel better since I decided that it's just because I take on too much.

Thanks to all the memebrs of the group for you feedback and encouragement

Lovely! Congratulations on your first tapestry!

That is beautiful louiseinoz! I like it very much. Laughing LOL on the big spend with the frame. It looks sweet with your first finished tapestry. Great idea to look back on it and think about what will work better in your future weaves.

That is what I love about tapestry, it can be worked in so many different ways. It is up to the artist what she wants it to be or looks like. And one never really knows the outcome until the last line of weft is beat in & the masterpiece is off the loom.
