This is a current topic in the Weaving list on quilt.net and I thought I would start it here since there might be different folks.  I bought an MP3 player so I could listen to Weavecast.  Since then I've added several other podcasts on fiber topics as well as philosophy and short stories.  I then found books on librivox.org (recorded by volunteers) that you can download for free.    Our library in Indianapolis has audiobooks for downloading too -- the same as ones you can buy so their production quality is top notch.  Here are the podcasts that I listen to:

  • Bound Off Short Story
  • Cast On
  • Escape Pod
  • It's a Purl, Man
  • Knit Picks
  • Knitting Psychos
  • limenviolets
  • Philosopher's Zone
  • Podcastle
  • Pseudopod
  • Ready Set Knit
  • Short Story Radio
  • Stash and Burn
  • Sticks & String
  • Weavecast

I listen to these when I'm spinning, weaving, knitting, washing dishes -- basically whenever I do anything that doesn't require a lot of attention.  If I have a difficult treadling sequence, then I turn it off.  Threading a straight draw, winding a warp, tying a new warp onto an old one -- listening to podcasts makes these tasks much more enjoyable.  Here's what happens, though, when I get too involved in what I'm listening.

It didn't affect the baby blanket I was weaving, but it looked funny and reminded me that I did need to pay some attention to the task at hand.

Does anyone else have podcasts they want to recommend?

Thanks Tina. Of course I went straight to Sticks and String because it sounded very backstrappy. Well it wasn't but still very interesting to read about that Aussie guy from my ''hometown''.

Unfortunately I know of no weaving podcasts other than Weavecast.  So the fibery ones I have are knitting.  But I love listening to his accent.  That's one of the reasons I like Philosopher's Stone too.  I just think Australian accents are very pleasing to the ear.

Tina -

Thanks for starting the thread.  You've mentioned some that I am not familiar with, so I will certainly check them out...  I too agree, that when I am just working away at the loom, it is a wonderful relaxing experience.

And, here are some additions that I can recommend:

Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase
CraftLit
CraftyPod
The Moth
StitchIt

I too wish there were more crafty or weaving centric podcasts, but quite frankly, Syne Mitchell does a great job with her podcast.  How could anyone hope to do as well? *grin*

There certainly seem to be quite a few "Storytelling" podcasts out there, kind of like The Moth, but I am still trying to decide if I like them as well...

The only way I can ever tie a new warp onto an old one is if I'm listening to a podcast or story.  Otherwise I get too bored and want to stop.  And now I've subscribed to more podcasts!
