Friend Stacey just sent me a couple of .wifs and the .docs she created from them by opening the .wif's in Word and pointed out where the pegplan numbers did not reproduce correctly.  I tried that and got the same problems.  I've used this a lot and make hand-outs for friends/students who use table-looms,  so this is a concern.  I think she is "vetting" WeaveTech, but i thought I'd post it here, as well, since some of us, like me, don't read WeaveTech.

thanks

I wish somebody could answer this.  I had a look at the "answers" Stacey got on Weavetech and it's just the usual "contest" to show how much the "usual suspects" know without actually addressing the question.  You have to wade through so much ego-tripping on that forum to get to the nuggets of really good discussions etc.

I did not answer, since I did not want you to have to wade through lots of not-really-information, but here goes:

I have tried Fiberworks PCW, both from tieup/treadling and liftplan mode. It works.

I have also tried with a couple of wifs coming from Weavepoint. That also works.

However, I don't think this information is helpful at all.

Good luck!

Nancy, this doesn't address your word question but is a "work around".  Is it possible for you to use whatever screen capture or screen shot function you have on your computer to capture the information you are trying to convey and insert that as a jpg or tiff in your word document.  Just taking a different path and avoiding the wif translation issue. It seems you are trying to use wif a way it is not meant to be used.  Deb

Deb, thanks for the comment, and I have, indeed, used "Grab" quite a lot, but I just think it's odd that when the .wif is converted to a text file (which you can do in Word and a few other wp programmes) not all of the peg sequences come out correctly.  Quite a few folks convert the .wifs to text for various purposes.  I find it very handy when I am working on the table loom, since I print it out, put it on top of a foam-core or something and use a t-pin to keep track of where I am.  For taqueté designs, you really have to watch where you are very, very carefully.

I downloaded and bought "Fiberworks" (let's here it for the bi-platform Macs!!!)  which is what Laura (and Lillian) uses and plan to use that to upload the "peg" sequences for the article.  I am keen to have an easy way for a reader who does not have weaving software, and will be using a table loom, to be able to use the .wifs.  Until I saw the "fallout" problem, I was going to upload the .doc versions.  I might still try that, with a "be aware" note along with.  I don't know.  Need to vet Syne on that.

I might drop Alice a line and see if she's ever run into that.  It's just very odd, and the first time I have run into the problem, having done quite a bit of taqueté weaves this way.

bests, nancy C

You going to Convergence?  A friend and I are planning to hitch up my camper and head on out.  We have room for 1 or two more (-; in there!!!

thanks, and I think Fiberworks is the way to go.  As I mentioned to Deb, this is the first time I've run into this particular glitch.

Hey Nancy,

I saw your question and not being a techie did not feel qualified to answer.  However, where are you driving from to Convergence?  I am outside DC and would love to go but the airfare, etc. is outside my budget.

we are driving from Atlanta, but it will be a two-seater truck.  You'd be welcome to curl up in the back of the truck but, it's illegal.  The truck is the only thing that will pull the camper.

If Carla decides not to go, I'd be glad to rendezvous with you in Atlanta...I am planning on picking her up there.

actually, I had a brainstorm..I have a couple of friends with four-seater cabs and am vetting them to see who would be willing to trade for a couple of weeks.  Since you aren't the first person to ask if they can come along....

the camper sleeps three or four, depending on how friendly we all get (HAH) actually, three is more comfy.  Anyway, if you'd like to share the camper, which is a pop-up with all the comforts of home except a potty 0-: but we'd be staying at a KOA and they have great facilities.  It's one heck of a savings over the hotels!!!

I will keep it in mind.  I may try to hit my son up for his frequent flyer miles and see if there are enough to fly from DC to Albuquerque.  Too bad it's next July, we were just there in September.  Although returning will be no hardship whatsoever.

We're camping at the KOA for Convergence and Complex Weavers seminars too!  We're meeting another couple there and the husbands will will probably be checking out the microbreweries while us wives are at the conferences.

Do you think we should start a group for folks who will be camping at the conferences or is that too short term of a use for a Weavolution group?

weaversouth (not verified)

I did that on Yahoo.  It's still up there, but I think that here would be better!  I had to keep telling people that I was NOT the maitre-d or travel agent (-;

It would be tons of fun, I think!  Have you already made reservations?  I wonder if we could get them to settle us all near each other?  Hey, we can have a cookout!

Here's the scoop on me:  my former neighbour and dear friend, who ALSO taught me to weave wants to come and, as it stands now, I am going to pick her up in Atlanta and we will drive over.  I haven't seen her in a couple of decades, so this will be a lovely time!

What kind of camper do you have?

my private email is [email protected] if you want to get in touch!

That's great you're going with your weaving teacher.  My husband tried to make reservations several weeks ago, but they wouldn't let him do it that far into the future.  We have an Itasca motorhome -- a big splurge of our retirement dollars but we love it!  BTW - my husband just checked the KOA web site again while I was typing this note and now it looks like we can make the reservations so he's doing that now.  They're already out of spots with 30 amp for motorhomes in our size, so you better make your reservations soon too!  And we should probably move this thread to a new group.  I'll go ahead and make one.  It can be for all weaving conferences and classes, so it could be useful all the time.

So how do you open a wif file?

Was looking at 4 shaft drafts and the 2 I tried to open both had wif file extensions that my computer says it can't open. When you click find a web answer it directs you to a "scan your registry for errors" commercial.

Can they be saved as jpegs or something? Doc, Word...PC non MAC user issues?

kerstinfroberg

wif means (more or less) weaving information file. It is used to send patterns between different weaving software. How they are opened in the different programs can vary - try "open" or maybe "import".
They can also be opened in programs like notepad or wordpad, as they are essentially text files. I would be careful about saving them again from a program like Word, as Word tends to add various formatting information.

(Sorry - I don't know anything about Mac, but surely there is a simple unformatted-text-only program on Mac, too?)

Hope this helps

The simplest way to open a .wif file is to download the donation-ware program WeaveDesign to your computer: http://www.pikespeakweavers.org/html/ppwg_weavedsn.htm  It will open and display .wif files for you.

If you like it, a small donation to the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild is in order...

You *can* open a .wif file in Word, but you won't get any useful information out of it - it will look like a long string of numbers.
