Hi all,

I just noticed that Karren Brito has posted a class in the Classes forum, Predictable Colors from Dyeing Using Lanaset Dyes (for protein fibers)-12 weeks . I did her "trial version" of the class over the summer and thought it was FANTASTIC!!  It was a huge amount of work, but the knowledge I gained was priceless - color theory, dye chemistry, how to develop a consistent process for reliable results, and how to mix up dyes to match an arbitrary color.  And I finished with a big library of samples that I can refer to later!

I blogged a lot about my dye study group experience over the summer, if you want you can read about it at http://www.tienchiu.com/tag/dye-study-group/ .

It is definitely a LOT of work, but the knowledge is priceless, and I have NEVER seen this kind of class anywhere else (and I looked for many years!).  Karren is expert both in dye chemistry and dye mixing (her book, Woven Shibori, has the best info on acid dyes that I know of), and shares her knowledge generously.

Two thumbs up for this class and I would totally do it again!!

Thanks for letting me know!  I've updated the link and it's working now (at least for me).

The class is for the serious minded.  You will end up with a library of info and samples.  But best of all you will end up with a dyeing process that works for your water, your dye pot, your situtation.  If you went to a venue for a workshop that had all the facilities (I don't know where there is one) when you got home you'd be at the starting gate.  No equipment, how does your water effect the dyeing, your jars....... a very big obstacle to actually starting to dye.  With this study in your own studio, with my support and interaction with the others in the class we will adapt to all these circumstances together. You will finish the class confident in your set-up and your ability to dye.

This is a multi-faceted study.  There will be my instruction on Webex.  We will have a discussion group here on Weavolution for text discussion and sharing of digital photographs and we will use Google docs to share documents.  I try to interact with each participant as needed, more when trouble shooting less when they are working along smoothly. But no matter how much I try to help, the participants always seem to learn more from each other!

Feel free to contact me about the class content or your participation.

PS.  My book is SHIBORI;creating color and texture on silk, Catharine Ellis wrote Woven Shibori.
