So I am hoping for this group that those of us with Dorset looms can get together (figurativly) and discuss them To discuss why you have one and what you primarly use one for Also to share where to get parts for them Also if someone wants to sell one Hope others join.

I bought a loom and don't know much about it. I'm hoping that someone can help me identify it.  I know almost nothing about looms but I'm interested in making some rag rugs as a hobby for a bit.  I know I will have plenty of stupid questions.

More pictures would be helpful. Lots of loom-saavy people here. A few more pics and I'm sure someone will know what brand it is.  If that's the picture, you've got 8 treadles so I'm assuming it's either a 6 or an 8 shaft, and I'll say, oak, cherry or walnut, but not much more one can tell without better pics.

I am hoping to borrow one and need to know if it will fit in my car. (a Toyota Avalon), either in the trunk or the back seat.

Can someone post the width, height, and depth of the Dorset loom when folded?

mendomyco

Hi Sally,

My Dorset is 32" wide plus the heads of the bolts - add another 1/2" total where the legs fold.

43" tall

11" deep

I had no problem moving it in my Prius but I did put my seats down.  Good luck!

sally orgren

I am off with the tape measure to see if will even vaguely fit in my car!

sally orgren

Thanks Mendomyco, the loom transport was successful, and it actually fit in my trunk!

Can anyone tell me what that extra piece of wood on the back beam is for? It attaches via wing nuts. Do you "clamp down" the warp when threading?

sally orgren

So that piece of wood is to secure the warp to back beam in transit, when the loom is folded up?

Hi Everyone!

I have a new to me Dorset loom and it does not have a warp advance lever or anykind of brake release. I was wondering if this is how the loom was orgionaly made or if it lost these parts over the years. Does anyone know where I could buy either of these things?

Tha nk you!

I am looking for a replacement for the ratchet on the warp beam of a 20" dorset loom.  The threading inside the ratchet to which the crank is screwed has been completely stripped.  Does anyone have a dorset that they are using for parts?  Thanks!

I'm a retired toolmaker who loves to make wooden things. 2 years ago my daughter volenteered my time at a weaving class .  She said, "my Dad could make this",  about the dorset loom she was using.  So I did.  one for her and one for the school. after using the school's loom 2 more of the students at the school have asked me to make them one.  These 2 are almost finished along with 2 more I built on speculation.  They are for sale.  I want to make or repair dorsets.  There is usually a grin on my face when I'm m aking loom parts.  I can repair stripped ratchet threads.

Hello, Latheboss:  Where are you located - and what do you charge for your looms?  What weaving width are they?  Have you ever considered making a 4 harness/6 treadle set up?  I have never preferred direct tie ups but to have a Dorset(style) loom, I would consider it...  Thanks,  Mimi

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to send a PM (Private Message) to Latheboss.

Click on his name in the message, and from that page, you should be able to send him a PM.

Thank you, Sally Orgren...  I did send him the message, I think...  Yikes!  I am exasperated by this format of communication but hanging in there as there are so few places to communicate with other Dorset owners.  WHY does it put all the extra code inbetween my sentences???  What am I doing wrong?  Sigh...  There is now a Facebook page for Dorset Looms.  Welcome to join...  DorsetWeaverMimi

Hi:

I am looking at putting a reasonable price tag on this loom. An elderly friend must move and has the loom for sale (Wisconsin). Any suggestions as to a price?

Dorset Weaver Mimi

Drkwood, I am sure your Dorset is sold by now but just wondered if you have other memories to share about the Dorsets...  Mimi

P.S.  When I preview my post, it has all sorts of markers for paragraphs, etc.  Looks almost like code...  Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?  I am typing just like I would type out an email... ???

Your browser is doing that.  I am usiong Chrome.

Hello!

I found a folding dorset on the street and am now attempting to rehab it! In the process of cleaning, I noticed there are pully-like wheels on the mid beam that is laced to connect the treadles to the harnesses. Sorry, I do not know the name of this part because I can't find anything similar on other looms and am pretty new to all this. Many of the pullies are broken or gone and I was trying to find a replacement. They are also threaded with a metal pin that doesn't appear to come out... grrr. Any ideas? Also, maybe I do not need to replace as I think they are just there to limit friction on the string?

Finally, wondering if anyone has pictures of this area of their dorset properly "strung". I took pictures as I unwound it but there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it and like I said it came to me with no information! Please see image of my loom on it's side for the area I am talking about. I took it from the top side of the beam.

Any help is much appreciated!

I’m thinking about purchasing a guild used for teaching Dorset and am replacing a larger 4-harness Harrisville. What feedback can you give me and how much is reasonable to pay for one?
