Was thinking of drafting something for fall colors, where a block or blocks on 3-4 shafts represents the pattern and then a tie down warp of twill for the background. Would have to be a double treadling with some treadles not tied up to all the lamms as I have just 8 shafts. I need a well rested and clear mind to put it together. :D

This idea, however it uses a tabby ground. Fall leaf color.

Beautiful pattern ReedGuy! Hope you weave it up! Like the colors too:)

This draft and the colors really feel like 'fall' to me - very nice!

It's great to see drafts here already! I think the colors are great. Do you think you'll weave this one or keep playing with drafts before you decide?

ReedGuy

I'm starting a narrow sample tonight with some left overs of cotton, not the same colours. Just want to see the cloth structure. I have the correct colours I want being send on the way from the yarn shop. It'll be a kitchen table cloth.

Fantastic Reed Guy! Please do click join on the Team page , so you'll be entered for the Random Prize Draws ! Remember to post your project to enter the People's Choice Award for Halloweave! I think we have some great prizes!

I've got to sit down and work on my Samitum profile drafts!

Yup, well I'm winding warp...piece meal. I'll weave up something from this, by gus or by glory. :D

ReedGuy

I finished winding on the warp yesterday. I'll be a while yet get the loom threaded as I'm still busy in the woods and too dead tired to work on looms at night. :)

Congrats! I started working on undulating twills this weekend, but didn't like the look of any of them. I think I've got the concept down now, you have to increase and decrease as the curve gets steeper/longer. What i was doing this weekend was all even so it was just wider straight lines. :)

Was just wondering if anyone with a supplemental warp roller (and beam) has ever tried terry cloth. The ground is tensioned and the pile floaters are slacker. I know you could do it with weft and two shuttles, but limited by loom width. It is discussed in 'Advanced Textile Design', by William Watson (1913), Chaper 17. It has also been blogged about if you do a Google.

I won't be trying it, at least not in the near future. But was curious if others have.

Hmmm, a second warp roller is maybe in my future. :)

ReedGuy,

I've woven a small sample of Terry Cloth on a 4 shaft loom.Although , I only used 3 shafts. So what I've done is pretty simple, but fun! Have included a pic, excuse the squished pile, it was sitting under some books :) I used light tension on the pile, and medium tension on the ground warp. Used bamboo skewers as rods to make the pile. I have in my notes that the weaving sequence was to release the tension on pile warp, lift pile insert rod, take up tension on pile warp, lift 1 harnesss of ground warp and beat firmly. i would weave in 5 skewers then start removing the one closest to me to use for the next woven row.

More than you wanted to know, right?

A little different method than Watson, but looks like it worked very well for you. Looks nice. The details are always good behind the weave structure. :) In Watson's book, it seems a couple of picks are loose in one shed, followed by a 3rd in another shed, then all three beat firmly. The ground is under high tension and the pile is slack. I am guessing this draws the loose pile warp into a loop. Be interesting to sample.

What got me to thinking was turkish ribbed towels that Lee Valley sells. Very absorbant. The ribs of pile in them is spaced apart with ground threads I assume.

I probably won't be weaving towels, but it's interesting. Yet, another use for a supplemental beam, as is cord weave for the packing threads. You can see where this heads. :)

Interesting! In mine, it looks to have 3 picks balanced plain weave under the loop, then one pick after each . Sampling is almost all the fun:)
