There are several things that might cause this, including different tie lengths on the back end. If the distance between the ties is uniform (one beam or the other isn't at a slant, like not well seated, etc), and if the tension is uniform, the length of the free ends of the ties is irrelevant and of no concern.

Make sure the distance from the warp beam over the back beam over the front beam to the cloth beam is identical on both ends. Then verify the tension by touch. Make sure the layers of warp are well separated. Weave a few rows and make sure your fell line is straight. If it is, you have nothing to worry about from this.

If a newbie does more than take the shafts & beater off, they should take photos before taking it apart. How to reassemble things may be obvious to those of us that have us that have used these looms for 30+ years, but putting the slot of one end of the beater on the wrong peg may mean a crooked fell line, and turning the lever on the front brake the wrong way means it doesn't work. And these are things I take off every time I thread my loom!

The B5's front and back beams fold in, but the whole loom is solid and quite heavy. It's roughly the size of an upright piano when folded. In nice weather you could take a flat trailer with lot's of rope for securing the loom, or you could rent a small truck. Even with a tall camper shell, mine is too tall for my F-250 pickup. Check Michael's link for dimensions.

I have a 20 shaft, so you may need to extrapolate lengths. It has 2 back beams and is drilled for a 3rd. It was made around 1980.

The metal brake lever is 16.5" with the twist & bend between 12" & 13" from the front end. The brake pedal is 29", while a normal treadle is 32".

The metal lever falls between the steel rods and the wood of the castle, not the rods and the shaft frames.

The bracket for the warp separator is 1 7/8". I think the lumber of the back beam is nominal 2", which means they put the marks at 2" but the saw cut takes some thickness so it's less than 2" in reality.

There is no reason not to leave them lying on the floor unless you are moving the loom (actually carrying it , not rolling it). In fact, I find it easier to leave them down so I don't accidentally use them. That said, newer baby wolfs have a dowel that attaches to its set of tie up cords via rubber bands. If you tie them to those cords, they do nothing if you accidentally treadle them. If you don't have that feature, you can still attach them to a single lamm (the bar that makes the jack scissor when you pull it down, making the shaft frame go up). Put rubber bands around either all the active or all the inactive treadles at a point where you will not only see but feel them, and weave barefoot or in a light foot covering. I actually mark different points in patterns with up to 3 sets of rubber bands on my Macomber, but there are more treadles on it.
