Howdy!
I discovered weaving at the age of 16 while vacationing in Cuchara, Colorado. In the tiny town there was a weaving shop with a floor loom residing on the wide covered sidewalk. When we arrived it was late and the store was closed. The loom appeared to have had something just removed from it. I desperately wanted to peruse the shop and talk with the owner to find out about weaving, I was intrigued with what I saw. After 4 days of trying, I never did get to talk with the weaver, but each day the loom had more and more progress with the addition of a new warp. Even with this limited information I somehow knew that I wanted to learn to weave.
Several years later I found Rachel Brown's book "The Weaving, Spinning, and Dyeing Book". I read it from cover to cover trying to master the vocabulary and wanting desperately to learn to weave. I had no idea even where to find a loom or a weaving teacher. I've always loved handcrafts from crochet, tatting, to embroidery, so I was always watching for fiber bargains. One day while perusing a SEARS craft catalog I found a LOOM! It was a 24" ridgid heddle loom. I submitted an order for the loom and several spools of carpet warp. I was finally going to learn to weave, or so I thought.
The loom came and I assembled it. I read the instruction book through several times and actually warped the loom. The woven results were less than spectacular, and disappointed I set it aside. I needed help, but didn't know who to ask.
I soon marry and move to a larger town along with my little loom. One day while perusing the local paper I find a picture of a woman sitting at a floor loom! The article was about the things she had woven, and the yarns she had dyed. I called the contact number and found my first weaving friend! She told me that she was a member of Palo Duro Handweavers Guild and that there were other weavers in town as well. I then learned that there was a weaving shop in town and I quickly went to explore it's contents. I joined the guild, signed up for a weaving lesson, and was hooked.
I am still a member of that guild, and I attempt to promote weaving as much as possible. I do several demonstrations through the year at museums, schools, and art galleries. I work at teaching others what I know, and am very interested in the historical context of weaving to our state. I like to remind kids and adults that when you bought a covered wagon it didn't come with a cover. You had to weave it.
