My name is Kerstin Fröberg - and it really *is* spelled Kerstin - and I am a professional weaver from the south of Sweden.

kerstinfroberg has commented on Countermarche loom: sinking or rising shed?:

were not introduced until the late 1700s or early 1800s, and were not common until much later. (When? I don't know - but I have seen a photo of an old "pattern-weaver" using 16 shafts on a counterbalanced loom - either shed had *lots* of patience, or had learned the trick and supplemented it with lots of practice :-)

And I can tell you that once used to CM, one will not want to go back to CB...

Fortunately, no-one bothered to tell us Swedes that a one-against-three shed was impossible, so we have done that for ages... and I have never had a shed so low as to be a problem. (In fact, I have never even noticed that such sheds are lower...)

So I say: try it out, it will probably work!

and/or measure the beater! If the beater has closed ends, that measure is the critical one - with open-ended beaters the reed can be longer... Also, measure the height of the beater. Some looms (my AVL, for instance) need a minimum height reed, which I came to notice the hard way. (See the tale here)

FWIW - I would never *dream* of using a "universal tie-up" for *any* loom :-) (OK, possibly a 4-sh CB, but only if I *had* to - lack of treadles, for instance)

It is so much simpler to do a logical tie-up - logical for the treadling sequence, that is. I even tie up more treadles tahn "needed" if it simplifies treadling. The tie-up is something you do once per warp (or item) - but the treadling is something you have to do hundreds, even thousands, of times per warp (or item).
