About me

I live near Washington, D.C. during the school year, making frequent trips to teach for weaving guilds and visit friends and family. I live in western Colorado for June, July and August, with plans to retire there around 2013.

I give programs and workshops for guilds and conferences, mainly about creating new designs in certain weave structures. Workshops on network drafting, advancing twills, tied weaves, overshot, double weave (four kinds), echo weave, turned taquete, tied weaves, woven imagery, and textured woven fabrics with curves. How long is your warp? Did you use packing material to keep everything even? Weavers use flat sticks or slats (from blinds, for example) or heavy paper or wall paper or cardboard in between layers as the warp is wound onto the beam.

I would check the circumference of your warp package at the back of the loom. Take a measuring tape and measure the distance around at the right-hand side and at the left-hand side and in the middle. They should be exactly the same. If they are, then your different lengths might have come from something you did as you tied on before winding. If they are not the same, then one side was wound more tightly than the other and this will create major problems as you weave. The longer the warp, the greater the problems are likely to become.

Usually Bronson and other lace weaves are woven as balanced weaves. This means that you have the same number of warp ends per inch (epi) as weft picks per inch (ppi). Your piece is weft-faced- we only see the warp color where there are warp floats. This is common with rigid heddle looms because of the limitations on epi but the cloth will look more like a woven lace if you can see warp and weft in all the plain weave parts.

I do like the purple color of your weft. You are clever to figure out how to do this with a rigid heddle loom. Normally it is woven on a floor loom- with more than 3 shafts, you can make different patterns with lace.

If you take a shadow weave draft, preferably without the incidentals, sett closely, and alternate thick and thin wefts, this is called warp rep. You can see the effect nicely in weaving software that has a warp-faced view and allows thread thickness. If you didn't sett more closely, it would still be a kind of warp rep but not as strong a design.

Instead of starting with an overshot draft, this method makes clear designs if you begin with a profile draft. You can make your design as large or small as you like. Start with any profile design having 4 blocks for a 4-shaft loom or 6 blocks for a 6-shaft loom, etc. Give it a parallel threading, alternate dark and light warp threads and use an opposites tie-up. You may weave as drawn in, or use any profile treadling you like, parallel treadling, two colors.

This will be shadow weave if your sett = ppi and all yarns are the same thickness. It will be warp rep with a closer sett and thick/thin weft.

Starting with an overshot draft makes the design more scattered- the requirements for overshot threading go beyond those needed for profile drafts or for shadow weave or rep. It is OK if you want the more delicate, less clear look where the design goes back and forth.
