This time of the year I have no time to weave, but looking forward to this coming winter. This is why I'm not on the forum so much these days. But look out come November. :D
Mike, put some furniture wax on the points of contact. If your going to add a finish to the wood, put the finish on first then the wax. The wax will reduce friction and squeek.
That old book is a gold mine as far as I'm concerned. ;)
This is a counter found in a device we call a hip chain or string box for measuring slope distance in forestry and mining. I use them daily. As a hip chain application, a spool of 1000 meters of cotton string is threaded through an eye and onto that silver wheel. Three wraps are made so the string grips the wheel. Each revolution of this particular one is 10 cm or 1/10 of a meter. The counter measures to the nearest 1/10 meter in this case. You can get them for yards. The counter here is mounted with two screws into a plastic base which seated it into a hole in the string box. The box part just looks like a bate box a fisherman would use to carry earthworms to fish for trout attached to the hip with a belt. If you knew anyone in forestry they might have a busted string box laying around and chances the meter works.
