Chenille Shibori Wide Scarves
I have a ton of natural chenille on cones that I don’t quite know where they came from. I’m usually really good about keeping yarn records or knowing exactly where they come from because I take the label or information about the yarn and tape it on the inside of the cone. The warp for these scarves has no info! Which means that it came from a dyers pack most likely from Webs. Awesome! I don’t know if it’s cotton, rayon, or synthetic! Sooooooo I used other chenille that I’ve used in projects before for the weft! I should be binding them and dying tonight (fingers crossed). I’ll post pictures as soon as I have them!
Bamboo Shibori Scarves II
I love shibori! And thankfully so do my customers:) I'm working on another run of bamboo shibori scarves!!!!!
Pictures to come!
Shibori scalf
As an introduction to the technique I followed the instructions in Catharine Ellis's book "Woven Shibori" on page 38. The Tencel I used I had previously handpainted in a sort of Madonna blue, I was not very happy with. Yet ideal for this project as I would have to dipdye the piece once woven. Dipdyed in Indigo. For the Monks Belt pattern inlay I used polyester shoe repair thread.
woven shibori sample
This is the end of my scarf warp. I dyed the scarf and sample with procion rust then pulled up the ties. For the sample I discharged half and then overdyed in an indigo vat. The two ends are quite different. I can see possibilities for interesting effects by discharging and overdyeing portions. I have already discharged the entire scarf and am in the process of dyeing that in the indigo vat.
shibori scarf
This scarf was woven undyed, incorporating shibori threads (fishing line) in a monk's belt pattern. Using Procion MX dyes, the colours were handpainted onto the gathered up fabric to attain the final dyed patterning.
Woven Shibori Scarf
Dyed the scarf today, just waiting for it do dry before I untie the knots. This was such a fun project!
Shiboriesque coat
2-block twill in hand painted 30/2 silk sett at 20 EPI & woven with up-twisted wool weft for lower, crinkled fabric & set at 30 epi, woven with black 30/2 silk noil weft for upper (smooth} portion & collar.
2 block shawls
I put today's date on this entry because this is an on-going project in my studio, each one is one-of-a-kind & I enjoy exploring this form... The shawls pictured (along with the hand knit cap, also my design) were featured in the Convergence 2002 runway show in Vancouver, BC. Both are 2-block twill on 8 shafts, the larger one sett at 30 EPI & treadled in ''Tango' rhythm (long, short-short-short, long-long, short-short-short. (I do lots of dance rhythms on my shawls & scarves, I used to teach dancing classes) The shawl around dd's waist is woven with up-twisted wool weft, on a 20 EPI sett to obtain the shibori-like collapse effect- hard to see in these little pics but it has the charcteristic bouncy 'pleats'.)
Permanent pleat shibori
This scarf was woven using handwoven shibori techniques of adding the gathering threads as the scarf was woven. I used Lanaset dyes to paint the gathered piece then steamed it to set the dye. To my surprise, the piece turns out to be permanently pleated. I can iron it flat , rewet it and it bounces right back to the pleated version. I'm assuming this is because of the soy protein fiber qualities, but haven't been able to get any feedback from the manufacturing company of the yarn.
