Photos of many small tapestries I'm finishing by stitching to fabric-covered mounting boards. Eleven are completed in one photo; ninteen await stitching in the other one.
More about the process is at Tapestry Share blog: http://tapestryshare.blogspot.com/2011/1...
Hi Tommye
Thanks for sharing this . Very impressive and beautiful! A question, When you stitch down to the mounting block have you completely folded under the heading of the tapestry like usual? Or do you partially fold under letting some of it show so it's not bulky.?
Hi Cathie,
About the ends... I take out heading and do half-Damascus for the warp ends usually. I don't like to have a hem for small pieces since it's bulky and shows up too much on the mounting board, I think. The half-Damascul will take the warp to the back side and then I whip-stitch groups of about 4 of those down lightly so they'll stay in place when I turn over the tapestry to mount it.
I've begun to use four-selvedge for smaller tapestries... the teeny ones in the first photo are all four-selvedge ones (except for the two larger ones that are done in the usual way and have half-Damascul for the end finish). With the four-selvedge there are no warp ends to deal with and it's a cleaner finish for small pieces.
Thanks for asking the question; I'll post something to Tapestry Share about the end finishing for the tapestries soon--I think I have a set of photos about that.
Cathie,
Just updated the blog post about mounting http://tapestryshare.blogspot.com/2011/11/mountingfinishing-method-for-small.html
to include a photo of the back of the tapestry with warp ends whip stitched down.
Thank you for sharing your link and information on your blog. Great instructions - very complete and not requiring expensive tools. Bonus.
I appreciate your input.
Tommye
