This is my first attempt at weaving words. THANK YOU ALICE SCHLEIN!! I thought a scarf with the grandchildren's names would appeal to a 5 year old and two 8 year olds. I think I have to fiddle with some fonts to come up with more readable words, but I'm happy with these scarves.
I was able to construct the draft by following the directions in Alice's book, The Liftplan Connection and by using Photo Shop Elements. What a great book! I can't wait to try more.
I am in no way affiliated with Alice Schein. Just a very happy weaver who likes her book.
beautiful and I love the colors
I'm sure your grandchildren will love these...they're so cool!

These are so much fun! I think your choice of colors makes the names quite readable. I don't know anything about the techniques you used but looking at these scarves really intrigues me. As in, how do you do that? Thanks for sharing!
Now that's another book I need to get "The Liftplan Connection" by Alice Schlein. Your scarves are so fun and beautiful. Your grandchildren will keep these forever. They will probably still be wearing them when they are 50. Great personalized keepsakes! I'm so glad you shared these with us. What an inspiration!
I'm so happy to see these beautiful scarves. You've done a wonderful job with the text. Thanks for your comments on my book.
Oh Wow. They are just unbelievable! What happy grandchildren you will have at Christmas! Thanks for sharing this.
I really enjoyed weaving the scarves and watching the names just pop up. I'm currently weaving off the remainder of the warp with a different (experimental) Photo Shop Elements designed warp. Really fun!

What fiber and size yarns did you use? Also what sett? I am thinking of making some hand towels using words and Alice's book.
I used 8/2 cotton for the warp on all of them. Wefts, ranging from 16/2 cottolin (doubled) for the red and blue scarf, and 5/2 perle cotton for the other two scarves. The sett was 20 epi. I used 8/2 cotton because I wanted the scarves to be washable and I wanted the children to be able to read their names on the scarves. The weave structure is broken twill so there is some drape.

I wish I could weave name scarves for my grandchildren-- these are lovely and make me wish! My loom has not enough shafts, but perhaps I can figure some other way. Thank you for sharing these.
Neshobe,
You can weave words with fewer shafts. Using Summer and Winter or a pick up stick. Before I got my loom with 24 shafts, I used an 8 shaft and a 12 shaft loom to weave letters and words. See the article here by Lillian Whipple in WeaveZine. It's excellent.
