This is the third Batman hatband I've woven for my husband. He LOVES Batman. The first hatband I wove was in 2005. It was my second attempt at cardweaving. I wove a band with 16 cards doing double weave, I don't remember what yarn I used. It wasn't pretty but he wore it until it faded to nothing.
The second hatband band was done on an 8 shaft Dorothy in Taquete', shortly after my Weavolution class on S&W and Taquete' with Lilliam Whipple last winter. It was OK, but not what I hoped for, not enough shafts. It vagely resembles a Batman symbol. I used 22/2 perle cotton for warp and weft, the hatband was too wide and too stiff.
My latest attempt is done in Taquete' using polyester sewing thread for warp and Gutterman silk sewing thread for weft. A better looking Bat symbol, but still not quit what I want. He loves it and will wear it until the hat falls apart.
I will try another band in a few months using a different draft and probably a different weave structure. It's coming along, practice, practice, practice!
This is so great. It's wonderful that your husband gets such a charge out of his handwoven hatbands. Very cool, and it has to make you happy that he validates your weaving in this way. Nice work!
I'm always impressed by weaving done with sewing thread. It seems like it would be so difficult to thread.
Quick! Come to Newark, NJ where they are filming the next Batman movie right now!
Sewing thread is not difficult to thread. My warp was only 99 ends.
Sally, my husband REALLY loves Batman. We see all the movies multiple times.
