These shuttles all have walnut featherwood tops and bottoms. Featherwood is the very dense and ornate grained wood that occurs where the main trunk of the walnut tree divides into the two main limbs further up. Some of the most ornate and bizarre grain forms in nature are found in this wood. If you look at the 3 shuttles front to back, the middle layer is bird's eye maple (closest), strong curly maple (middle), and tiger maple (back). The 1st two shuttles have ebony yarn-hole surrounds.

Yes - with finishing, I go through 11 grades of sandpaper (80 - 2000) by hand only, and each grade has to remove the scratches from the previous grade. Then, 10 coats of finish are applied over a week's time. The finishes used avoid yellowing, which is common with standard varnishes and polyurethanes.
