For the summer holidays I made a warp 8 meters long. It is woolen knitting yarn in my favourite colour, purple. I am planning to just weave along as my mind leads me, thinking that maybe there will be some kind of jacket in the end. The first finished piece has a length that will fit that.
I love this idea, Eva: taking a long warp and weaving whatever appeals to you as you go along -- then when you're done weaving, having a jacket with all the variations of summer in it.
Will the beautiful greens of your summer spinning project go into this beautiful purple cloth, too?
Ruth
Ruth, I do not think it will go into the jacket. The long warp is ordinary norwegian knitting yarn of the kind that would be fine for a norwegian style sweater with lots of pattern. It is a bit coarse and most likely very strong. I chose it because of the colour, and as it was rather cheap I bought a lot of it. I have made quite a few things with cheap yarn, as that makes me feel free to experiment and have fun without thinking that this must be perfect. I think this kind of weaving has given me lots of experience that will come in handy when I weave with more exclusive materials.
As the fiber is fine merino and I spin a thin yarn, it will not go with the jacket project. I have not decided yet what kind of project the fiber will lead to, only the colours are decided yet, but weaving it will be.
